Fountain Point: Traditional North Country Resorts

by Toughluck

We spent many summers coming to Fountain Point. The kids love. They can run, get away from the parents. The game room, swimming beach, paddle boats and the other kids soon dominate their time. Outside in the fresh air means they sleep well and so do you.

Established in 1889, Fountain Point is a National Historic Site family summer resort with 54 acres of manicured lawns and woodlands and nearly 1/2 mile of panoramic shoreline on Lake Leelanau, in the heart of beautiful Leelanau County, Michigan. A Hotel B&B with antique furnishings and 19 comfortably refurbished, 1-7 bedroom cottages, Fountain Point is for friends and families who want to spend quality time together in a picture-book setting with an atmosphere that has been personal and genuine for 115 years.

Top-5 amenities include:
Panoramic, lakefront setting in Leelanau County
Private cottages in a social, resort atmosphere
Sandy beach w/child-safe swim area/nightly campfire
Free breakfast, many common rooms in Victorian hotel

The Grand Hotel: Grandest Hotel in the State

by Toughluck

The largest and most prestigious place to stay is on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel. A watering hole for the rich and famous since the 1880's, the Grand Hotel still sets the standard for elegance.

REDWOOD MOTOR INN: NICE, CLEAN HOTEL IN LEWISTON

by dtownkitty

The rooms are very big and spotlessly clean. Nothing fancy but reliably clean and comfortable with satelite TV and good beds. It looks "lodgy", has plaid carpeting in areas. There is a small indoor pool. They have coffee and pastries for breakfast. Its close to everything in Lewiston, which really isn't that great of a feat since it is such a small town. Very close to some nice national forest areas and great for snowmobilers.

SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE: CAMPING ON THE "WEST COAST"

by dtownkitty

The National Park offers three options for camping:

The Platte River Campground offers sites with electric hook-ups for RVs and trailers as well as walk-in sites for those who want to carry their tent off the beaten path. They have modern showers and restrooms.

D.H. DAY campground is more rustic, wooded, with vault toilets and water spigots. It is the closest to the Dune Climb, Pyramid Point, and the Scenic Drive. It is also very close to the really cute, tiny town of Glen Arbor and Historic Glen Haven. There are tent sites right on the beach of Lake Michigan, too.

There are also many backcountry camping opportunities, including locations on the unspoiled Manitou Islands. Ferries leave from Leland, MI. North Manitou ferries have only once a day service, so if you go, you better plan on spending the night!!

The DH day is most convenient to all the attractions of the park. They do not take reservations here and they are only 12 USD/night.

Platte River has electrical, many reservable, 21 USD/night.

Backcountry is unreservable, 5 USD/night and very limited.

GET A HOT SHOWER at the Empire Township Campgrounds next to the tiny airport. They charge 25 cents for every 3 minutes.

USE THE BEAUTIFUL MODERN TOILETS AND FACILITIES. Brand new in Glen Haven where the historic buildings are, 2 minutes from DH DAY. Brand spankin' new and nobody uses them.

Topinabee Pines: LP A comfortable cabin for a great price

by dlandt

Topinabee Pines is a very large cabin located in the northern part of Michigan's LP, about 30 miles north of Gaylord and 30 miles south of St. Ignace. Numerous lakes and natural attractions adorn the area, and though Topinabee itself is quite small, it is located centrally within upstate Michigan's primary tourist area. The cabin (or cottage) is quite large, having two bedrooms as well as a hide-a-bed sofa. The kitchen and dining room are also quite large, making for a very comfortable stay. A fire pit and BBQ complimented the already fine stay.

The cabin had the look and feel (also many of the same furnishings) of a real home. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen furnished to a degree far superior than most comparable cabins. The simple necessities of life, such as toilet paper and paper towels, were stocked in abundance and all the appliances worked. A washer and drier were a very welcome bonus, as were the pamphlets and fliers of various regional attractions. A gas station and large convenience store are located nearby.

Port Crescent State Park: Camping at the Tip of Michigan's Thumb

by Stephen-KarenConn

This was a beautiful campgound in a 550 acre state park on the shore of lake Huron and Pinnebog River. The campground offers 181shaded level sites, all with electric hookups, picnic table and fire ring. There are also modern restrooms with hot showers.

Many of the campsites had outstanding views of Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron, some right on the water, and all within a very easy walk. There is a nice sandy beach area (three miles of shoreline), a playground, and over five miles of hiking trails. Campfire programs and special tours to nearby areas were also provided during summer. One could spend an entire relaxing vacation here and never leave the park. We found it to be an excellent base from which to explore more of Michigan's "thumb."

Harrisville State Park: Campground on Lake Huron

by Stephen-KarenConn

We stayed here for three memorable nights within sight of Lake Huron. When the first light woke us in the mornings, we took our lawn chairs and walked barefoot through the sand a few steps out onto the beach, drank our tea, and watched the sun rise over the lake.

This is a beautiful campground in an unusually scenic setting. Sites are level and mostly shaded with electrical hookups. Even though we were in a tent, we still used the electricity for lights and a hotplate for cooking. There is also a playground and clean restrooms with hot showers. The cost of buying our tent and the campground fee together was less than we've paid for a single night at some hotels, and most hotels aren't this much fun. Besides, we still have the tent.

by treesmil

Bear Lake Lodge: LP A quiet cabin, spacious and affordable

by dlandt

This is a large, 3 bedroom cabin that goes for $450 a week and is open all year long. It is on the lake, and you get at least a glimpse of the superb nature. Its quite quiet and even though you do have neighbors, they are well screened by the trees.

It comes with a boat, a full kitchen with microwave, refrigerator etc. It has a huge porch with a tremendous view and a BBQ. Washer and dryer. Fire pit.
