Mackinaw City/Mackinac Island
"Mackinaw City"
This was a stop on our road trip. the KOA in Mackinaw City has a pool, is clean and well-run. Mackinaw City itself is Disneyesque in feel, with many shops on the main drag. Plenty of places to buy fudge, but no snowmobiling in the streets. It's the jumping-off point for Mackinac Island.
"Mackinac Island"
the Island is a fast 20-min catamaran ferry ride from Mackinaw City. The Grand Hotel (yes, THE Grand Hotel) is on the island. "Somewhere in Time" the lushly romantic movie starring Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve, was filmed here.
There are no cars on the island except for one police cruiser - horse-drawn carriages haul all goods. The only way to get around is on horse, bike or foot. This makes for a peaceful, quaint experience. The "cottages" on the island are each more charming than the next, and the entire island is neat and manicured.
The Grand Hotel itself is vast, and has a most amusing dress code.
Every other shop on the island sells fudge ... how do they stay in business? A most interesting place. Take the walking path and find the plaque where the two leads met in the movie, in a picturesque grove overlooking the lake.

Finally - a Pastie meal!
