Our rushed trip from Atlantic Canada to Regina, Saskatchewan required us to drive approximately 1100-km per day if we were to make it back according to schedule. We were able to do this with no problem on the first two days, as we arrived in Saginaw, Michigan at about 5:30 PM on our second day, after skirting traffic outside the Detroit, Ann Arbour and Flint areas as we headed north in Michigan.
Before leaving on our trip, Sue had discovered a series of small tourist magazines that contained 'special' vouchers for accommodations at certain hotel chains and which are available at the Welcome Centres in the various States as well as Rest Areas along the Interstate highway system. Once in Saginaw,we presented the voucher we had at the Four Points Sheraton front desk and there was no hesitation at all in honouring it. We were given a room on the top floor for US$66 including taxes - I guess having a room used at a reduced rate is better for them than just leaving it empty! The deal included a continental breakfast as well.
The room itself was great, especially the two very comfortable Queen-sized beds and a nice bathroom too. We made use of the TV to watch a program that we had been following and also had a great view out over Saginaw from our 4th floor room. With some great Chinese take-out food, we settled in for the night with smiles on our faces, looking forward to reaching Mackinaw City in the morning.
This hotel has a beautiful beach area and a very nice view of the bridge and island. However, the walls are very thin, so noise is a problem. You can hear your neighbors at all hours of the day and night. It is a little rundown and could use some renovation, as well. Breakfast barely exists - don't count on them to feed you. Parking is somewhat limited. One nice thing is they rent videos, which is handy if you're stuck inside on a rainy day.
THIS ISLAND HAS IT ALL!Bed&breakfast,Inns,Hotels,ect,
We come to the Island and stay at the Murray a few nights then spen the best day at the Grand Hotel! The travel center is the best they have imfo on all the places and will send you a copy or you can pick one up at the imfo center on the island, and even call to find out about vacancys.
O.k. rates this gets trickey but we are money savers, we go mid week-weekends are way to busy and no fun for the kids,We go mid spring, things start to warm up or late August before the help, mostly college students go back to school! We dont book any rooms, we just go!I would not do this on a weekend! We check rates first night at the Murray Hotel, close to lunch time. Grand hotel call now for a reservation and you will get a quote for standard room lets say $210.00 a person, kids meal card $25.00/toddler no charge.Call around lunch time from the travel center phone on the Island and if they have rooms you may get your whole family in for $220.00 inc tax, this price includes breakfast and a 7 course meal for all of you and kids can eat with the camp staff table, main dinning room and have anything they would like,so this price is not bad at all!
The Grand Hotel has lots of history, presidents have been here,Movies filmed on location here-'Some were in time'The service is par none you have had elswere! The breakfast courses thru your nightly meal 5-7 courses, I lost count it was so good!!The staff mostly from the caribean is outstanding,One time we left our toddler with a housekeeping staff member who came to our room in a dress, house rules in the P.m.She asked if he awoke from his nap if she could stroll him out to the nightly activities,we said of course, when we came back that night he was with her having a blast with the lobby orchestra ! And he was entertaining the other guests, acting like the band leader! You would think that a 5 ***** star Hotel like this would not catter to kids but not so!The children center is one of the best We have seen yet!Our older son has so much fun with the other kids and the things the staff puts together for them he dose not like to go!So bring the kids!
The State Park on the lake provides great views of the Mackinac Bridge. Both the sunset and sunrise were amazing!
