Munising Bay in January
This is a very popular place for ice fishing! In a typical winter, the ice on Munising Bay achieves a thickness of between 3 and 5 feet, and by mid-February you might see 250 ice shanties scattered from shore to shore.

Hi there,
We're thinking of a weekend in the area and hotels are coming up quite pricey ($70+ per night). I'm wondering if there's another area closeby Munising that would have cheaper hotels?
Thanks,
Dawn :)
July and August are the "high season" in the U.P. so rates are higher now. I live in Marquette which is 40 miles west of Muninsing. Marquette is bigger with more accomodations so you may find lower rates here - but probably not by much.
Thanks for your reply. Yea, Marquette would be a little far for us since we only have the 3-day weekend to work with.
Happy travels,
Dawn
You might be able to find a mom and pop place for less, but you never know what you're getting with those - it could be the Bates Motel!
Hello ! Hey i have a few friends up there :) and they own Ship Wreck tours in munising look that place up on the net and give them a call ask for kate and if she isnt there ask for amy and tell them that Toby sent you and see if they can give you the # to Scotties motel , ahh lol i think thats what it is , Tell Kate that its the one I stayed in for new years a few years back . Its nothing speacial but i thought it was cheap and it was right in town. Most of the places just a few miles away from town in the u.p. are or used to be 2 for $20 hahaha Well good luck and if you have any more ?'s let me know. tobydog72@hotmail.com

After hiking under the canopy of trees it is refreshing to be out in the open, and this comes at a good spot on the trail. We planned for a beach party, and brought wild clothes (see nightlife). I even went swimming!! Lake Superior is always cold being the largest, deepest, and furthest north of the great lakes, but after several days on the trail a chance to clean off and refresh is always too great a temptation for me. The Beach Party!! Enjoying a day relaxing in the sun, drinking some wine, and our special party foods that we lugged this far. It was all worth the effort.
Take the ferry over from Grand Island Landing. You head off along the beaches and then climb up about 300' of vertical to the top of some stunning sandstone cliffs. If you look closely you might be able to see a fish swimming below. Then downhill one of the lighthouses. On to Trout Bay. Take some time here to relax and take a swim. Then you head inland on the Island and back to the Ferry. I've made this description quite short, but plan on spending most of your day here and exploring for yourself. A don't miss for the Mt. Biking crowd. Bring water and bug repellant.
This highest of all the waterfalls in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is reached by a three mile (round trip) hike through a pristine northwoods forest. It is approximately the half way point to Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach, for those who want a longer hike.
To reach the falls take H-58 east of Munising for about 15 miles. Go through the small town of Melstrand and in another mile or so look for a sign on the left pointing to the Chapel area. Take this bumpy, narrow dirt road to a fork, stay right, and you will find the trailhead parking area.
The best views of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are from the water, so boat tours are very popular in the warmer months. We booked passage on such a boat and were more about half way through the tour when we encountered a thick fog bank formed by the cool waters of Lake Superior clashing with the warmer air along the coast. This was on a beautiful sunny afternoon in August, and the fog was still so thick that the tour was cancelled in mid-course. Our Captain turned the boat back and offered all the passengers on board a full refund of our $25 ticket price. We got about almost three quarters of a tour for free. Nice people!
