Hey, How did I get up there?
I really enjoy hiking. It is the right pace for life, and Pictured Rocks is wonderful. No hard climbs just an easy forty mile hike, and no reason to hurry. Take a week, who cares? Seeing the beautiful rock formations.

Backpack or rucksack. Plastic garbage bags, leaf sized make good pack protection from the rain, and smaller plastic bags are good for keeping your gear dry and for hauling your trash out. Hiking boots and lighter canvas shoes for days end. Comfortable loose fitting clothing for backpacking and layering. Rain gear!! Toilet Paper!! A must when you are backpacking. Toothbrush, leave the paste at home. Citronella candles and other bug repellants. Candles add weight, but make your camp look nice. Weight is always a consideration when backpacking so I recommend only a wide angle lens, and a small flash. Tent, bedroll, sleeping bag, stove, camp stove and fuel. Water Bottles!! A Filter if you don't trust the water is easier than boiling, but adds weight. For the beach, bring a towel, and swimsuit (if you are so inclined) I prefer to swim naked so I don't have to carry wet gear. You have to carry anything you will eat, so plan carefully. I always find that I eat very little on backpacking trips. My body tells me that if I am going to be doing this, I should lose weight.
Marquette Michigan is about a 45 minute drive from Munising. If you are interested in maritime history visit the Marquette Maritime Museum, which has been in operation since 1984. Lake Superior is the largest body of clean, fresh water in the world. It is almost 400 miles east west, and 200 miles north to south. Over 1300’ at its deepest point it is a powerful, beautiful, and frightening, body of water sending many ships to its depths below in its fierce gales. This museum will tell you the story of the lake through its interesting, and sometimes interactive exhibits. This museum is open daily May 1 to October 31 and is located at 300 Lakeshore Boulevard in Marquette. The photo is copied from the museum's website.
Along the 1.5 mile of stretch of Lake Superior shoreline, between Au Sable Point Lighthouse and the Hurricane River Campground, one can view the remains of several old shipwrecks. Karen and I hiked the regular trail from Hurricane River to the lighthouse, then we returned via the rocky/sandy coast. Along the way we stopped to inspect the timbers and steel of several shipwrecks which have washed up at this point.
To reach Hurricane River Campground take H-58 about 31 miles east of Munising. It will be a dirt road for the second half of the way.
Lighthouses are very popular attractions in the United States. There is something about them that captured the imagination. Maybe it is the shape. This lighthouse used to guide ships in because this area used to be logged, and there are interpretive signs about the logging days. To get an idea of scale notice the girl standing at the base of the tower.
