Clarion Hotel Detroit Metro Airport: Convenienient Clarion Hotel Near Detroit Airport

I stayed here overnight after missing an international connection from Detroit to Beijing, and Delta Airlines arranged for me to stay here so I could make my connection the next day. Apparently this is where they send their missed connection passengers as I gathered from the desk clerk at the hotel. He was a friendly sort of fellow and seemed sympathetic and inviting enough in chit chat. He was accustomed to dealing with the airline voucher I gave him and had me a room in short time. Very efficient check-in.

It's quite a large hotel complex, with long corridors on all sides surrounding a courtyard area with a swimming pool. The carpet in the corridors had seen better days, and I hoped the room was better. I wasn't disappointed and it was fairly decent. Good bed, a comfy chair to sit in, a desk & chair, big LCD TV, clean bathroom with everything you need. There was no mini-bar and no bottled water provided, but internet was free in the room. Pretty average place though for the most part and though not overly impressed, it seemed convenient and comfortable for the night.

There's not much to do in Romulus, Michigan, but that's not the fault of the hotel. This hotel serves a breakfast and dinner buffet, but does not offer lunch service in the dining area. There is enough within walking distance to get a meal - a Speedway store/gas station right next door, and a short walk to find a Big Boy & McDonald's. Further walking you can find some local restaurants in a small strip mall with international - Italian, Chinese, and Lebanese. There's a subway sandwich shop amongst these other restaurants as well. A bit of variety at least for the hungry traveler, and options are always good.

All in all, it's not bad for a stay overnight making connections. I had the breakfast buffet, and only $5.95, which is a good price. I had an airline voucher for $6 to cover that too, and Delta knew the price I guess in sending me there. I think the dinner buffet is $5.95 too. The food is not bad for the price. Despite planes flying overhead too, it was fairly quite in the hotel. Not many people milling about here either as you might expect from a hotel near an airport. Looks like a fair number of pilots stay here too and I saw some of them coming and going.

There is a shuttle service that operates from the hotel to the airport and is offered twice every hour on the hour and half hour. It's free of charge and takes about 10 minutes. You can catch the shuttle from the airport to the hotel as well and look for the Clarion logo on the shuttle bus as each hotel has it's own bus. Tips are apparently appreciated, but I didn't see the drivers all that friendly, and seemed a grumpy sort to me. The pilots tipped, but go there often maybe, and I was not inspired to.

Nice central courtyard with pool. Restaurant has dinner and breakfast buffet at decent price.

Springhill suites: Springhill suites

Fantastic hotel, short distance from Detroit airport.
I stayed there for a stop over between my flight from the UK to Nashville.

Hotel seemed new, very clean and modern and very reasonably priced, under $100 including breakfast (a steal at the exchange rate at the time!)

Room was very large with a great view of the approaching aircraft. 'Living area' with tv, sofa, fridge, coffee machine and microwave, was separated by small screen from the bed area.
Beds were comfortable and bathroom very clean and modern with good range of toiletries.
Despite its proximity to the airport and being right under the fight path, room was very quiet although it appears the runway was changed in the evening which helped.

Hotel have minibus transfer to/from the airport. From the airport the buses run every few minutes. If you have an early flight from the hotel, just tell the reception the morning before.

Breakfast is simple, look after yourself job. Coffee machine, cereal, waffle machine in throw away cups/plates but it served a purpose. The reception has several microwave meals for sale which can be heated in your room

Fantastic location for airport although a long, long way from Detroit centre!
