Various: Lodging at Isle Royale
Lodging is available at the Rock Harbor Lodge, on the Southeast of the island. Lodging is available in Houghton, Michigan and in Grand Portage, Minnesota; the two main access points to the island. I stayed at a decent Super 8 in Houghton, and an overpriced Casino/Hotel with bad service in Grand Portage

Various: Camping in the Park
There are a number of primitive camping areas all through the island. Little is available so you need to bring everything for your needs with you. I have not used any of them, just want to let you know what is available.

Cottages: Life of a Resident
I didn't actually stay in a cabin, as at the times I visited, they were still occupied by the families that had built them before they were purchased for the park. Their locations were stunning. Many perched on stone cliffs, 20-60' (-18 m) overlooking the lake. Surrounded by the pine forest, they are away from what little busy area there is near the docks. Those on Tobin Harbor can watch the seaplane come and go on it's rounds from the mainland.
The 20 Cottages are located between the Rock Harbor Marina and Tobin Harbor. The Cottages are equipped with kitchenettes including utensils and dishware, a private bath with tub, shower and dressing room, one double bed and one bunk bed, linens, towels, electric heat and a studio type living area.
A stay in one of our comfortable Cottages includes one half-day use of a canoe.

Unique Quality: Each room has a deck that looks out over Rock Harbor. If this was a busy waterway, it would not be as pleasant. The occasional small boat or the ships from the mainland make a majestic traverse of the waterway breaking the solitude for just a moment. From my 1st floor room, the deck was just 3-5' (0.9-1.5m) below and 15' (4.5 m) away. The early morning sun, shone onto the deck a welcoming warmth on a cold morning. The mornings are always cold, even in the summer. Nights get down to the 30's F (-1 C) regularly.

Camping on Isle Royale
Hikers must camp in designated campgrounds on the island. Do not worry.. they are fantastic. The sites are spaced generally within a medium length day hike from each other, located near water, and individual sites are separated from others for privacy. There are fire pits at some sites and shelters are sometimes available, but do not depend on them just bring a good tent.
Unique Quality: The views are usually great, and the grounds are well maintained and lightly used in my experience.
