St Joseph is directly across Lake Michigan from Chicago, so you can check local Chicago stats and conditions more easily. The east shore of the lake gets quite a bit of snow at times, coming off the lake with the prevailing winds. It tends to be colder near the lake than inland. In winter, the lake freezes near the shore and you get beautiful piles of ice, driven by wind and crashing waves.
If you have or have not been to Saint Joseph - The tourist are some of the rudest I have ever seen. They come to this beautiful beach, they leave their trash, they show up and think they can just move in front of anyone, THEY STINK so stay away
Be sure to bring a swimsuit in the summer and all the winter wrappings in winter (think lake effect snow). Layers are called for in the spring and the fall with a 30-40 degree difference in am and pm temps.
I spent this of May in Michigan to continue working on my master's degree. After a month of intense studying, two questions still remain. First of all, why didn't anyone ever tell me before that St. Joseph's exists? IT'S AMAZING! And secondly, why wasn't I informed of all the great food that Michigan has to offer. I can't believe I only have a week left here. Waaa!
