Public transport

by ctissh

My family and I plan to enter Sault St Marie ON from the Michigan side. However car rental cars are not allowed to enter. How do tourists without their own cars cross over the border? Are there public transport systems available?

Re: Public transport

This is not true. Canadians may not drive a car from the USA into Canada unless it has Canadian Liscense plates. If you are a tourist and want to rent a car on the US side of the border to drive into Canada you will have no problems.

I have not heard this one before. Usually the issue is that the car company does not allow its cars to cross the international border, although some companies do permit this for an additional charge. My knowledge is for crossing from Canada into the US, but I am not sure how things work the other way round.

Well I can assure you that car retnal companies in the USA allow their cars to be driven into Canada as long as a Canadian resident is not the registered driver. All one needs to do is walk down to a car rental lot, especially in the summer tourist season and see all the cars on the rental lot with US license plates.

You didn't ask, but I'll mention it anyway

If you want to enter Sault Sainte Marie on the Canadian side, everyone in your car MUST have a passport or passport equivalent -- *NO* exceptions. Here's some good advice about this border crossing:

Not correct PR-7.

If you are a US Citizen or a US permanent resident you do not need a passport to enter Canada, but you do need it to get back to the US. The following is a clip from the Canada Border Serives Agency website:

"If you are a citizen of the United States, you do not need a passport to enter Canada. However, you should carry proof of your citizenship, such as a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, as well as photo identification. If you are a permanent resident of Canada or the U.S, you should bring your Permanent Resident Card with you."
