House Hunting

by sally90

My Aunt and Uncle lived in South Haven Michigan for years before they both died at a good age. i can just remember they lived on a road called Route 5 zone 49090 could someone confirm if there is such a place. I visited there three times but dont know if the address is correct.

Thanking You

"Route 5" is probably Rural Route (RR) 5. Looking at it, it shows to be County Road (CR) 687, which runs north-south just east of South Haven.

Re: House Hunting

and zone 49090 is the zip code used to mail stuff to someone in the US (as in South Haven, MI 49090)

Re: House Hunting

by glabah

Depends. The US Post Office had such a thing called "Zones" that predated the implementation of ZIP codes. If this address predates the 1963 implementation of ZIP codes, it is going to be hard to translate the zones and address routes from that time to the ZIP codes used today.

Travel Tips for South Haven

Beach Sunset

by deecat

See all the photographs to see the progression of the setting sun.

Our first night staying at our Bed and Breakfast, we walked across the street to the beach to try to take photographs of the sunset; however, we missed it by about one minute. I'm glad that we did miss it on that first night because it was somewhat cloudy. The next night, we made sure that we were there in plenty of time. There is a wooden lookout ledge over the beach, and the two of us made sure that we had ideal spots for capturing the sunset.

It had been such a picture-perfect day, not a cloud in the sky. The sun was a huge orange ball as it started to descend in the west. We took several photographs as the stages of descension progressed.

There were people on the beach watching and taking pictures. They appear in our photographs as silhouettes.

This took place at Dyckman Beach which is located off of North Shore Drive, located to the right of the only Stop sign on North Shore Drive. It is across the way from our Yelton Manor Bed & Breakfast

Civic Pride

by deecat

Whenever I travel, I often notice those particulars in a community that set it apart. One item that I keep a keen eye for would be what I call the town's Civic Pride

South Haven, Michigan is a town with lots of civic pride. We first noticed it when we walked across the bridge and admired the beautiful flowers that lined both sides of the bridge. One evening as we walked to town, we had to cross over to the other side as a gentleman was using a hose to water the flowers. The hose container was left out on each side at the end of the bridge and no one bothered it. I had said to Mickey that someone really had to take care of these flowers because they are so lovely. Being a big gardener, I really appreciate flowers/plants that are well attended. [See Photo #1]

Next, I always notice the local memorials that a city presents. I noticed two such memorials. One is a War Memorial for those who served in WWI [See Photo #2] It's a simple yet attractive dedication to those who sacrificed during "the big war".

Another memorial is the one located on Phoenix Island (the traffic island on Phoenix Street in town) that is dedicated to the fire fighters. It's sponsored by the SHAESA or the South Haven Area Emergency Service Authority. [See Photo #3] If you want to hear more about it, you can go to www.shaes.org.

Finally, I also enjoy how a town welcomes its visitors. see Photo #4 for such a welcome sign.

I was impressed with how clean, welcoming, and beautiful the town of South Haven, Michigan appeared.

Where to moor the boat

by Bunsch

South Haven boasts more than 1500 boat slips along the Black River. The city owns a transient marina at Riverfront Park, where weekend boaters can tie up. Private marinas also offer transient slips, and a number of these offer boating supplies, marine services, and launching facilities.

McIntosh Apple Orchards

by deecat

McIntosh Apple Orchards are located:

6431 107th Avenue
South Haven, MI 49090

Mickey and I wanted to see an apple orchard so we placed this address into Mickey's GPS, and are we glad we did; otherwise, we would not have found it.

On this beautiful last day of our visit to South Haven, and after our 5-mile walk in the Kal-Haven Trail State Park, we were ready for some fresh apple cidar!

We walked into the McIntosh Wine Cellars building and discovered what a classy place this was. We ordered glasses of ice cold cider for $1.00 each, and gulped them down. How refreshing!

We met young people from the St. Louis, Missouri area [policemen] and others from southern Illinois. It was fun talking to them and comparing places we had lived and had traveled.

Then, we proceeded to try several different kinds of wine.

The background about this orchard: The orchard was purchased by Bruce McIntosh in 1997 [76 aces of 26 different varieties of apples]. There are also peaches and pears on the property. This particular orchard has been planted from the 1860's.

You are able to hand pick fruits for your own pies from their farm market. They let you sit on the porch and watch the children run up the rows of the orchard. The Farm Market has fresh grown fruit and locally grown vegetables. They also have jams, preserves, honey, maple syrup, and other local products.

They also provide wine tasting, and you are able to purchase from their premium fruit wines. We were told that their main focus is the "creation of Traditional Olde World Style Hard Syder as well as iced apple appitiff".

"Welcome to South Haven"

During the last weekend of July, Sue and I got away for a 3 day, 2 night stay through Northern Indiana and Southern Michigan. We both have our own digital cameras so we go a little crazy with pictures, but now that we have just a great audience here on VT, well here are the links to the tips and about 100 shots that trip. Nappanee, Indiana and South Haven, Saugatuck and St Joseph, Michigan.

Located about 2 hours from Chicago is the lake town of South Haven, Michigan. Long a haven for Chicagoans this pleasant little town on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan is home to numerous Bed and Breakfast, Inns, a quiet downtown area, a beach and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits.

"The Harbor Looking Toward the Town"

There are many weekend visitors who take their boats up from Chicago and park for 1 or 2 nights at the public docks. South Haven is just one of several towns along the eastern Lake Michigan shore line where the boaters can dock.
