    Home Away from Home

    by

The Grand Traverse Resort has nearly everything to make you comfortable. The resort, situated on 900 acres of land just north of Traverse City, comes fully loaded. I stayed here for a conference in June of 2010, and had a tremendous stay. The rooms are clean, well-apportioned, with views of the lake or the countryside. There are multiple restaurants in the hotel, ranging from a sports bar to a haute cuisine stationed on the 19th floor.

The staff were courteous and helpful in suggesting ways to enjoy my stay outside of conference goings-on. Trips to the beach or golf were on the table. You could truly lose yourself here and just spend days soaking up the summer sunshine and beautiful location.

Unique Quality: The uniqueness of the resort is in all of its extra amenities. Within the hotel, there are easily 3 restaurants, including Jack's Sports Bar, Aerie Restaurant, and the Grille. There is a shopping facility on site, which has numerous different stores for souvenirs and crafts. The resort has a golf course. A spa service. A full gym (with 2 indoor tennis courts). An indoor pool/water play area, and an outdoor pool. Lakeside amenities with jet ski rental, pool, snack bar. The list goes on and on.

    Best midwest family summer resort

    by

Great service, amazing condos at great prices, even during high-season. The kids will love the indoor and ourdoor pools. Parents will love leaving the kids at day camp while they go golfing or to the spa. Traverse City is a midwest summer paradise!! Check out this hotel online at: Grand Traverse Resort & Spa

Golf Courses.

The Traverse City Area has some of the finest golfing around. All price ranges and challenge levels. Try "The Bear" at the Grand Traverse Resort or "The Legend" at Shanty Creek. These are just two of dozens of golf courses in the area.

Lucky Choice

We were going to Gaylord to play golf and heard Traverse City was nice so we decided to spend a night at the Grand Traverse Resort. We liked it so much that we stayed three nights. Our room in the Tower was spacious with a great view. Service was very friendly and accommodating. Golf couses were great. Private beach on Traverse Bay is a few blocks away, but very nice with pool, snack bar and bathrooms. Will return next year!

Something for Everyone

My husband and I went to Traverse City for the Cherry Festival and loved our stay at the Grand Traverse resort. We stayed in the renovated Tower rooms. The views were great. The bathtub was large but I couldn't get the jets to work. The resort had everything. Beautiful pools (indoor and out) which was helpful because it was only 60 degrees F and rainy for two of our days there. The one nice day we went to The Shores complex and Beach club. It was wonderful. Nice shallow water, sandy beach. Towels provided. There were boat rentals and a busy pool. We also enjoyed the Starbucks coffee shop in the lobby and the shopping was upscale. We didn't play golf this time but the golf courses are well reknown.

Not for us but maybe if you golf...

by TripAdvisor Member awcolley

We do not have any complaints about the service, cleanliness, or comfort of the rooms. They were adequate for the price. Though we heard some "horror stories" while we were waiting in line (for at least half an hour) for the one complimentary breakfast provided during our 3 day stay; all our interactions with the staff were pleasant (except one mentioned below). The maids did not disturb us when the "Do Not Disturb" sign was out, and our rooms were properly cleaned each day.

We stayed in the tower, on the 8th floor, and had a great view of East Traverse Bay. But, note that the bay is at least a mile away; so if you want to do any water activities, you must drive off the resort property.

The lounge/restaurant on the top floors of the tower probably have great views; but, unless you like to dress up, don't even consider getting off the elevator onto those two floors, a snooty hostess will remind you quickly of the dress code and hurry you back into the elevator. We just wanted to look at the menu posted there!

There are several little shops at the resort... probably because it is more than a mile to anything; and then only a K-Mart out in the middle of nowhere. We got free wireless internet access, which is a nice perk (but becoming more common).

There are three beautiful looking golf courses at the resort. If you golf, this might be a good place to stay.

If you like to gamble, there is a free shuttle to the nearby casino (both the Grand Traverse Resort and that casino are owned by the same Native American tribe -- there is a propaganda channel on the TV devoted to the tribe).

We don't golf, we don't gamble, and if we ever had a reason to go back to Traverse City, we would probably stay at one of the dozens of equally priced places that are actually on one of the two arms of the Traverse Bay.

Dated

by TripAdvisor Member engineer64

The resort is dated. The rooms are in a need of a major facelift. The AC/heating systems are poor and noisy. They are the old style units that sit on the floor. The beds have little support and the bathrooms small.
There is a resort fee that includes stuff I never used.
The wireless internet was very good.

Sleepless in Traverse City

by TripAdvisor Member maresa

I guess the 11 million dollars they just spent on the resort went to the lobby and the towers. We just spent 3 nights in the older hotel building and got very little sleep. The pillows were TERRIBLE (all 4 of them) and the top sheet didn't stay put. I was up every night remaking the bed because the sheet would end up around our necks or half on the floor, and the pillowcases slid off easily. The bed is very soft (which some people may like), the sheets and blanket looked worn and the pillows were noisy ( ! ) and flat. The bathroom did look like it had new tile and was clean but small. We did use the great fitness rooms (treadmills, weights, etc.) but didn't use the pool or Wi-Fi---so you do end up paying for things you don't use. We ate in the Trillium Restaurant on the 16th floor of the tower one night----it was quiet and elegant (but you can go in your jeans----they have relaxed the dress code) but the food was uninteresting, especially for the price they charge!!!!

Not So Grand in Traverse

by TripAdvisor Member NJLovestoTravel

We selected this resort for a family reunion and were very disappointed. We all stayed in condos booked far in advance and found out when we arrived that they were so far from the resort facilities and the so called beach, we might as well have stayed at home. In addition, we had a beautiful view of the road. The internet access which was billed as available in every room was not available in ours. We supposedly had a 3 bedroom condo which turned out to be two bedrooms with a loft (the beds in the loft were child sized and the sun streamed in every morning about 6am-my two teenagers were not amused.) Management was sympathetic, but much too little too late. If you decide to stay here, just be very specific about details, or better yet, stay elsewhere.

Partial week Condo or house rental in July

by dldkag

I'm looking for a 1-2 bedroom place for my family within 15 minutes of Traverse City. I'm finding most rental places seek full week rentals for the summer, and we only need 4-5 days. Any suggestions? I'd even consider a hotel if it has a suite set-up, with separate living and sleeping areas. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Bite the bullet and pay for a week. It still would be less than what any place would charge for 4 nights.

Grand Traverse Resort has condos - when we went last summer we were able to rent for four nights. I don't know if they've changed their policy since, though, but it might be worth checking out.
Good luck to you!

If you're going to Traverse city during the first two weeks of July, you should book your place now. The National Cherry festival is going on then and everything books up for months in advance. see www.nationalcherryfestival.org for info.

My original e-mail was actually from 2006, not this year. We just ended up at the Days Inn, but it worked out fine. Had a great week, and I look forward to getting back to TC.
