if you are visiting during the Ice-fishing Extravaganza, then you absolutely must visit, and take part in that. More than 14,000 Ice-fishermen gather at Hole-in-the-day bay of Gull Lake to take part in the largest non-profit ice-fishing contest in the world.
During the Summer, I would bring a friend golfing one of our many PGA-style golf courses, or kayaking or boating on one of our beautiful lakes one of my best/fondest memories of brainerd are the tranquil times near sunset (from about 7-9) when all of the fishermen are out in their boats and the sun is reflecting off the water and I'm in my waders flyfishing, it's quiet, and serene, and the call of the Common Loon wails across the water..... it's a beautiful place....

Sometime in the 1800's two Indians were picking berries near the edge of town, when a group of angry white townspeople found them and dragged them back to the center of town. They were accused of raping and killing a young white girl and they were hanged outside the local tavern. A few years later, a white man confessed to raping and killing the young girl. The tavern still stands in downtown Brainerd and sometimes at night when the bar closes, people have reported hearing the cries of Indian people and the beating of drums.

Brainerd has alot of activities, including fishing, swimming, and boating on several of the nearby lakes. There are also shops for those little trinkets you just have to have so you can remember your vacation. Brainerd also has go-cart locations. The big "must see" is Paul Bunyan. It is a small amusement park, but the best part, you don't have to pay to take your picture with "Babe" the blue ox. It stands right outside the doorway. It has been several years, so maybe some updates have been made in this matter.
