The famed Aerial Lift Bridge
Well, I was born in the big city of Minneapolis, but my mom was born right here in Duluth and since she still lives in Minnesota, she comes up here often to revisit the places of her youth. It's a great town to get away and relax and to enjoy some fresh air and nice people.
Duluth has a sizable Finnish-American community - no doubt they are key supporters of the Family Sauna downtown. Finnlanders thrive in cold climates, but there's nothing they like more than the bracing heat of a sauna.
Let's practice our pronunciation: it's SOW-N-UH. (not SAHN-UH)
Check out the wine and liquor stores around town for some local brews. I bought a beer that was actually brewed in nearby Ashland, Wisconsin that was pretty decent. The beer pictured here is a local beer from Duluth that is served at the Scenic Cafe (see my restaurant tip). It was a Lake Superior Brewery Mesabi Red. The brewery is located on W. Superior Street and you can try their beers on tap at the well-known Grandma's Saloon in Canal Park.
I grew up in the Lester Park neighborhood. It's a middle class Duluth neighborhood on the east side of the city. To the far east of the city you will find Lester Park. There is a parking lot near 60th Ave E and this park shouldn't be missed! Two rivers run through the park (one being Lester River of course) and there are lots of hiking trails. During the winter you will find numerous cross country skiing and snowmobiling trails. There are some senic views, small waterfalls and the opportunity to see nature. It's my husband and my favorite and we try to visit it every summer. He also likes to fish for trout in the rivers and sometimes is pretty lucky. If you hike far enough in the summer along one of the ski trails you will come across an overlook - which had a view of a local nude beach. But bring your binaculars because you will be pretty far up!
I find this photo fascinating because it shows how the railroad spurs thrust unto the lake. The iron ore is pulled out of the ground in "Iron Range" cities like Hibbing, Chisolm and Virginia and then carried by rail to the port city of Duluth. The end of the line are these spurs that extend into Lake Superior for the sole purpose of depositing the ore into the vast ore ships that will eventually carry the iron to the steel mills of the lower midwest. Places like Gary, Indiana and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
