Swimming in Lake Superior

by CoachDalzell

We have scheduled a vacation in Duluth for the week of the 4th of July of this year. We have two children, ages 12 and 10. Will it be possible to swim in Lake Superior without a wetsuit? I dont mean extended hours of swimming, just normal at the beach days. Thanks for your help.

Swimming in Lake Superior

by PR-7

The first thing to know about swimming in Lake Superior, even in early July -- the water is COLD!! I don't mean refreshing cold, I mean dangerous cold. Take a look at the graph of water temps in western Lake Superior over a 100 years of sampling (second graph):

www.d.umn.edu/~jaustin/ICE.html

Note that, even in early July, the temperature is still only a few degrees (C) above freezing.

Duluth and Hiway 61 have areas of spectacular scenery. But it's not a place for a day at the beach for a pleasant swim. It's just too cold.

PR-7 is right. Superior is very deep and very cold. Most of the bigger "up north" resorts and hotels along the lake have swimming pools for that very reason. An adult might be able to take it for a short while (and some locals do) but most visitors find it just too icy.

You can always try. Start with your toes and see what they tell you!

North MN climate is very change-able so come prepared for anything - you could have 90's and you could have 60's. And bring LOTS of bug spray!!! I don't know if you'll have a car but if you do, take a day trip up to Grand Marais. It's a nice little harbor town with a lighthouse, and a fun place to hang out for a day.

Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse near Two Harbors are also musts, and those are only 25 miles or so north of Duluth.

Travel Tips for Duluth

Duluth - Service Center for Northeast Minnesota

by Toughluck

Consider spending extra time in Duluth and using it as a base of residence to see much of northern Minnesota. It's the commercial hub of an area stretching over 100 miles (160 km) to the north and northwest. You can choose between a leisurely drive for 2+ hours to your destination and then spending the night, or returning to Duluth for a different trip the next day. In the summer, days are long. You can be up and out before 7 a.m. and not have to worry about dark until after 9:00 p.m. (2100 hrs).

A wonderful day trip is the North Shore Drive. Take a 50 mile (80 km) drive up or 160 mile (256 km) drive one way or anything in between. Check out the 'Off the Beaten Path' tips for things to do and see.

Swim or wade in, walk along...

by Libs

Swim or wade in, walk along the shores of, gaze at, and generally commune with Lake Superior. Swimming in Lake Superior! As I said, this was the best thing I did all summer. Some how, after spending ten or fifteen minutes in Lake Superior, all the bad stuff that had been going on with me was gone and I just felt incredible. It may be cold, but it's worth it :)

Get a Copy of the Ripsaw

by Ironic1

The Ripsaw has gone to a monthly format recently and is thus no longer such a great source of current information as it was previously. It's still good, but it just doesn't give you the up to date information it used to.

Look for the Transistor or check out the Ripsaw website for current information on what's happening in Duluth.

DON'T forget a JACKET!!!!!

by babybird

Weather is usually much cooler in Duluth nomatter what the season. During my last visit, temps at night (Mid July 2004) were dropping into the low 40s. You'll want a mix of cooler and warmer weather gear as the weather changes abruptly.

Old Minnesota Point Lighthouse

by babybird

Go over the lift bridge and follow the road out to the small airport on Minnesota Point. There is a fantastic beach near the parking area that stretches out for almost 2 miles.
To reach the lighthouse you can opt to either follow the path (Marked nature trail) or walk along the beach. The ruins of the original lighthouse are located several hundred feet
from shore in a clearing above the beach
not far from the present lighthouse. The old shell of this structure dates back to the mid 1800's and still stands as a slightly eerie remnant of a time gone by.

The walk on the beach is worth the trip alone.
