The Grand Ely Lodge is a nice place to stay. It is right on a lake, but far enough out of town that a car is required to get to downtown. Prices are reasonable, and location is beautiful. Highly recommended.

$196 overpriced "hell hole" cabin

by healeymom about Silver Rapids Lodge

Our family just returned from our first visit to Minnesota. We were way overcharged ($196 with tax for one night in a small cabin near a noisy road & bridge)The cabin must have been built in the early 1900 with the same bedding. I requested another cabin after a sleepless night in beds with springs popping out, etc. The plumbing backed up while taking a shower, no air-conditioning, towels, housekeeping/room service, outlets for blowdryers, phones, tv, and the sofa bed was dirty and broken. In the morning I asked for better accomodations. We were offered another cabin for $40 more. When I opened the door I took in a heavy wiff of mold and said no thanks. Staff appologized and explained they had just purchased the place and had a lot of work to do. I suggested they shut their doors until renovation was complete. Their prices and cabins do not live up to thier website at all. It was terribly overpriced!!! We should have known when they insisted we pay for the mandatory second night stay in advance. We will NEVER ever stay there again. After we checked out, we visited the Grand Ely Lodge for lunch and wished we had stayed there. It is everything we were expecting out of Silver Rapids Lodge. If we come back to Ely again, we will stay at the Grand Ely Lodge. As far as restaurants go, the best were Cranberry's, Sir G's, The Chocolate Moose and The Grand Ely Lodge.
We enjoyed the annual (July ) Blueberry Festival.
The best accomodations we experienced in Minnesota were the Super 8 in Eveleth (great service, clean, comfortable, friendly, great continental breakfast, pool, hot tub and sauna and the best price!!!!!!) and the Grand Lodge and Water Park in Bloomington (cost $159 per night for clean, new and very comfortable accomodations for a family of 4, which included complimentary 2 day waterslide passes for all four of us as well as shuttle service to Mall of America and the MSP airport). The Silver Rapids Lodge cost more than the best hotels we stayed in - it's a crime!

Good steaks if you're tired of fish!

by Jolietvilletraveler about Grand Ely Lodge

A 5 minute drive from downtown out between the lakes. Some tables have a great view. We, however, wound up back in the corner where all we saw was wall! It is a lodge/conference center, so a little bit of a different 'feel' than just a restaurant. Food was very good and several choices. Hostess had many duties, including bussing tables & taking payments, so a little bit of a wait at times. Wait staff seemed friendly and efficient. Reuben soup! With, yeah, sauerkraut!!! Excellent!! Also good chicken/wild rice soup. Great filet & good flank steak. Mounds of very lightly steamed broccoli with the filet.
