Nesting in Excelsior
Excelsior doesn’t have a bonafide hotel yet (they’re working on that) but they do have a B&B within a short stroll of the lake, downtown shops and restaurants. The Bird House Inn is in the 1858 James H. Clark Victorian with five rooms/suites decorated in period furnishings. Several adjacent sitting rooms may be rented for more spacious relaxation space or sleeping larger parties, two rooms have whirlpools, and the biggest suite has a kitchen. See the website for photos, descriptions and prices.
Breakfast is continental style during the week with more substantial (hot) fare offered on the weekends, and you may choose to have it delivered to your room - with mimosas and a newspaper - for an extra fee. Other amenities include a complimentary wine bar and pleasant front porch, lawn chairs or communal living room for enjoying your libations; books, DVDs board/lawn games and picnic baskets for borrowing; gas grill; free parking and wifi; cable TV.
Several packages are available for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries or honeymoons, and spaces are available to rent for small weddings and receptions. No pets allowed but children are welcome…although I would not recommend it if yours are very young, or particularly vocal and rambunctious. :O)
B&Bs are not my thing but the inn is seeing very good reviews from fans of this sort of accommodation on Trip Advisor.
Unique Quality: The ONLY accommodations in the immediate area.

Travel Tips for Excelsior
Famous Local Legend
So here's Excelsior's most interesting legend, involving a beloved and infamous character - Mr. Jimmy Hutmaker: Eccentric and partially disabled, he was also a devoted walker and regular visitor at the local businesses. Shop owners, in turn, kind of looked after "their" Mr. Jimmy. Once upon a time, way back in 1964, the Rolling Stones played at long-gone amusement park here and Mick Jagger visited Bacon Drug (also gone) where Mr. Jimmy just happened to be hanging out at the soda fountain. Now, there are two versions of the story and it's a little hazy just WHO, Mr. Jagger or Mr. Jimmy, ordered the cherry Coke but one of them absolutely did. That flavor wasn't available, Mr. Jimmy uttered the mega-million-dollar line "'Well, you can't always get what you want" to Mr. Jagger and the rest is history. True story - ask any local. Mr. Jimmy recently passed away and there's a bench on Water Street (main street) in his honor.
Excelsior on the Lake
This is one of my very favorite escapes in the summertime! Excelsior is a mere 20 minutes west of downtown Minneapolis (on Hwy 7) but feels like a different world. Perched on the south side of Lake Minnetonka, this historic community prides itself on supporting local businesses and maintaining the relaxed, people-friendly atmosphere of another era. Not to say that it's old fashioned or behind the times. No way. You'll find upscale shops, art galleries, antique stores, a terrific coffee shop or two (no Starbucks here!), a movie theater, an excellent playhouse and enough restaurants to cover everybody and anybody's tastes. Add a 14-acre lakeside park, docking for the majority of Lake Minnetonka cruise operations (as well as private craft), the LRT Regional Bike and Walking trail system, and lots of seasonal events - you'll find something to do. Or find a spot by the lake and do nothing. Slow down. Kick back. Hang out for awhile. Ahhhh......
