The main drag
by zrim
The times change even in Hibbing. This street scene looks little different than it would have in 1953, but the times are different. People no longer have their union jobs. Companies no longer provide lifetime employment. People in Hibbing have to scramble for their daily bread and many have given up to look for greener pastures in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The street scene looks the same, but no longer can people do all their shopping up and down the main drag. Malls have replaced the mom and pop clothing stores, the local hardware stores, the shoe stores and the record shops. What's left is nick-nack shops, insurance offices and a lawyer or two. Progress?

"A dying mining town"
I grew up in Hibbing and still have several friends who live there, so I go back every once in a while. Hibbing used to be the center of a massive iron ore mining community called the "iron range". Right now Hibbing is in its declining years. It is not in as desirable a location as either Virginia to the east or Grand Rapids to the west, so tourism will not likely be HIbbing's saving grace.
Hibbing is the home town of Bob Dylan, Roger Maris, Kevin McHale, and Bus Andy. There isn't really much in town to see about any of these celebrities except there is a bus museum in honor of Bus Andy, and a bar called Zimmy's in "honor?" of Bob Dylan.
