Places to stay in September

by L2go

We will be visiting the Twin Cities in mid-September. Would we get better rates with a weekend package at some downtown hotel or at an outlying (suburban?) motel? Is there a big disadvantage to staying in an outlying area?

In my opinion, public transit outside the downtown metro area is pretty poor in MSP. The savings from a hotel may be offset by cost of taxis and/or rental car fairly quickly.

With that being said, choose your location based on what you want to see, because cost will come out in the end.

It really does depend on what you want to do. The best of both worlds might be to get a hotel near the Mall of America. They are usually pretty reasonable and connected to downtown by light rail. That said, you can find some pretty reasonable hotel stays downtown - especially on the weekend. You'd also be closer to Uptown, which I think it a lot more lively than downtown on the weekend. I'd say most of the inner ring suburbs are fairly typical suburbs with the big box stores, etc. There are, of course, some exceptions. If you were going to do an outlying hotel/motel, I think it would be more interesting to stay a little farther out in some of the marina towns - maybe near/on Lake Minnetonka or in Stillwater. Those areas will have a lot of recreational things to do that wouldn't require you to drive all over.

Have fun!

Thank you. These answers really helped!
(We want to see the Walker and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Are those "downtown"?)

Yes, those are down town. Try google.maps and search for them that way. It will show exact location.

Travel Tips for Minneapolis

Liquor Store Hours

by emoja

Don't even think about trying to buy a bottle of rum at 10pm on a Wednesday. Following are liquor store hours in Minneapolis:

Monday through Thursday: Open til 8:00 PM

Friday and Saturday: Open til 10:00 PM

Sundays: Not open

On Sundays, Twin Citians will drive to the Wisconsin border if they're running low on beer. It's about a 30-45 minute drive from Minneapolis to the border, quicker if you're coming from St. Paul. Liquor stores are mixed in with strip malls right on the border.

If you're coming to the Twin Cities you're probably already going to the Mall of America (which you should). Besides the Mall of America the one thing you should see is downtown Minneapolis and the Mississippi River. These are intersting places where you can mix right in with the locals. Whenever I'm traveling and I'm away the thing I always miss the most about Minneapolis is its nature. I miss its parks, forests, lakes, and rivers. In my mind the city is so beautiful and clean that it tops every city in some way or form.

Minneapolis: RUDE CITY USA

by midwesterner19

I have been many places and Minnesota and especially Minneapolis is filled with rude bigots. Minneapolis is the rudest place I have ever set foot. I mean honestly, just because they have sub-zero every day and have no culture doesnt make them better from people from other states.

Must Bring BUG SPRAY!

by ForestWolf

Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter, though calimine lotion may be helpful! Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. If you do not have massive amounts of bug spray, and I suggest "Deep Woods Off", you run the risk of having all your blood sucked completely out of your body.

Lake George

by laforstraveller

Lake George is a wonderful recreational area North of the Twin Cities in Anoka County. They have a beautiful sandy beach with plenty of little fish for the kids to chase around. They have two separate swimming areas roped off, a general swimming area and one specifically for babies and toddlers. Rembmer to bring sand toys for the kids! They have several picnic paviliions w/grills and a nice playground for the kids. There are quite a few biking/hiking trails in the area. This is a perfect place for a day out--and it's away from the crowds that tend to congregate around the Harriet and Minnetonka lakes.

To get there, take 35W North to Hwy 10--go West. Take Round Lake Blvd North. It's about a 15 minute drive from here. There is a $5 parking fee--or you can opt for a $25 Anoka County Parks sticker which will give you free entry to all parks in Anoka county--good for 1 year.
