Sundays?

by JoeNYC

I've got Monday meetings in downtown Minneapolis and so will be hanging around Sunday and Sunday night. I heard most things are closed on Sundays. Is that true? Any suggestions for places for a Sunday in downtown?

Re: Sundays?

Hope I'm not too late! Actually the only things closed are the shops and small restaurants in the skyways that serve mostly business people during the week. All other restaurants and bars will be open - and that's about what downtown Minneapolis is all about. Do take a walk down to the Mississippi and across the Stone Arch Bridge - great place for a stroll. And grab a seat up on top of Brit's Pub and watch the lawn bowling - excellent place for a pint and some sunshine! Check out the Minneapolis pages for more tips....

Travel Tips for Minneapolis

Relaxing summer evenings

by mnhaus

One thing I really like to do during the summer is grab a bottle of wine and head down to the bandshell at Lake Harriett. During the summer there are nightly free concerts put on by a variety of local groups. The music provides a nice background to a lovely lake and (usually) a pleasant group of people. This isn't exactly a hopping event, but if you are in need of a peaceful scenario then this grab your wine, a blanket, and some bug spray and head down to the lake!

How To Find Events

by emoja

Pick up a copy of City Pages, our free alternative weekly. In here you'll find information on every concert, restaurant, poetry slam, book reading, and bondage event going on in the Twin Cities for an entire week (and sometimes further ahead).

You can find City Pages at a plethora of stands across the city, especially downtown. If you're having trouble locating it, pop into any bar or restaurant and ask someone. If they don't carry them, they'll be able to point you to a vendor.

City Pages is distributed on late Wednesdays (Thursdays at some locations).

How to Speak Minnesotan

by aristotle334

So as to not appear too touristy, it is good to become familiar with the local talk and customs, dontchaknow? You betcha. You'll need to know that turning down a casserole could be offensive in some situations and that all offers must be refused several times before reluctantly accepting. Also, it's important to understand the native goodbye rituals, lest you cause yourself to be late for an appointment.

So before you're heading up Nord to do some Walleye ice fishing, pick up this book! I promise you'll laugh a lot... and Minnesotans can't lie.

Packing List

by go_doggo

warm clothes in the winter are a must. By warm I don't just mean a sweater and light coat either. I am used to the cold and I dress in layers: thermal shirt, tshirt, sweater, then a warm outdoor coat with good wind protection. warm hat and mittens or gloves, too

Tamarack Nature Center

by zwei618

Tamarack is a nice place to walk and enjoy nature. There are also a few live animals in residence and plenty of activities during the year. It's 11 miles NE of the Twin Cities in White Bear Township. Check the website for seasonal goings on. They usually have Halloween parties, cidering demonstrations, maple syrup collection days and lots of educational programs.
