orlando-Minneapolis flights
by shohman
We need to fly to MSP for a christening in May. the flights are outrageous..about $300 rt. I tried Expedia, Orbitz and cheaptickets, but all are about the same. Anyone know of any discount airlines that fly this route?

At this point in time, you will not likely find much in the way of discounted airfare in May. Especially if that travel involves Orlando. There will probably be an airline that breaks ranks, and starts discounting after Easter though. Another site you might wish to look at is: www.airfarewatchdog.com. Gary

I just went to Northwest Airlines and tried for May 9 - 11 - there's a $243 fare. NWA is either based or uses MSP as a hub, so they should be your best bet. Just google for northwest airlines and you'll get the link.
... by the way ... should you have a layover in Memphis and end up around gate 17 ... get BBQ! Forget the exact name, but somebody's interstate BBQ - this is where all the airline personnel line up. Try the pulled pork, beef or chicken. Even the sides are good! mmmmm

kayak.com searches most airline websites as well as most discount travel websites

When in May are you flying? If it's close to Memorial Day, I would not wait much longer to get that ticket. Arbitrarily I looked at the weekend of the 9th but if it's right around Labor Day ... good luck! Ticket to Frankfurt for Euromeet was a tad more than I would normally pay for that reason ...

thanks for the advice. I am leaving May 17 and returniing either the 19th or 20th.
I figured the best bet was to gamble and check every day.

As of Sunday at 4:27 Northwest has flights for $283 (including taxes) leaving on the 17th returning on the 20th (will be lower Tuesday than Monday).

Travel Tips for Minneapolis

Minneapolis is a very diverse city. Uptown is one of the coolest areas I have ever been. Setting near Lake Calhoun, it is famous for funky stores, restaurants and people watching. Seeing a play on Hennipen at the Historic theatre. Minneapolis has the highest number of theatres per
capita next to New York.
Architecture: Children's Theater Company
by yooperprof
Michael Graves, who also designed the recently opened Target Wing at the MIA, also was responsible for the renovation and expansion of the Children's Theater Company on the other side of the building. (The CTC is attached to the MIA.) More glass, more openings, more inviting. I didn't get a chance to look inside and see what the theaters are like. Just don't compare it to the new Guthrie complex downtown!

avoid confrontation
by Faracy
People in Minnesota will often come off as cold, and distant. This isn't entirely untrue. Its a product of our environment, and heritage. Its best to just not take offense when someone does not respond as warmly to you as you might have expected, does not want to hug you, and for those from kissing countries, does not want to kiss or be kissed by you. You shake hands, and personal space is 3 feet apart at minimum. We are notorious for not making eye contact, or speaking directly. We've been taught to do this, out of respect, and fear of the other person. I like to think of it as almost showing deference.
Quite a variety

Minneapolis is a great place for spectator sports - from the NHL (well....we will see), NBA, WNBA, NFL, major and minor league baseball, not to mention NCAA sports, there's always something going on here.
Stillwater.. a quaint little town
by Faracy
This is really not as small of a town as it might appear to be. There is essentially one main street, and the other street which runs parallel to the river.
There are all sorts of cute little clothing boutiques, knick knack shops, and the like. Finding something both cheap and good to eat here is a challenge.
They have a co-op on the main street, which is about as close as one will get to a grocery store within the actual Stillwater downtown area. There is a huge strip with the usual Wal-Mart, mega grocery store, and chain restarants on the way into town. I don't know when it becomes technically Stillwater, but soon after the strip.
Sit and have lunch by the river, and go to the book stores, they are rather impressive.
