MSP vacation

by booklikeabook

Hey everyone!
My GF and I are going to come up for the M S Fair, Walker, the MOA, and a show at First Avenue. I'm from Iowa, she's from Georgia.

I am looking for a place to stay for 4 nights over Labor Day weekend. I have seen a couple B&Bs, and a hostel, but I would like to avoid getting a car.

Any suggestions of where to stay that is close to public transit and non-corporate, non-chain, etc.?

Thanks for reading!

Can't tell you about the hostel, Chas, but Nicollet Island Inn is in one of most scenic spots downtown. It actually is on an island - right on the river - and you can walk either downtown from there to the Walker/Sculpture Garden or the other way to the bars and restaurants in Northeast Minneapolis. You can walk a ways, right?

Nicollet is the only inhabited island on the entire length of the Mississippi and I wrote a tip about it - as well as other good stuff to do/see on the waterfront and NE Minneapolis - in my Minneapolis pages.

I assume you're flying in? The light rail goes downtown from the airport, and it also services MOA so that's easy. Depending on how much luggage you have, you may want to grab a cab to Nicollet Island Inn from the rail station.

Not sure yet how to get you to the fairgrounds (which are in St Paul). They run express shuttles from various parts of the city, and I'm assuming they'll run one or two from downtown but they haven't posted pickup locations for this year yet. Keep an eye on this webpage for updates:

Oh, just to clarify - for ease of getting to/from the airport to the Walker or MOA, you really should stay somewhere downtown. You could also stay in Bloomington -closer to MOA - but downtown will give you more interesting walking around without a car. The bus system isn't terribly convenient for sightseeing.

Hi, We have found good rates and a fun atmosphere at Aloft which is a chain I guess but a less traditional and more fun/low key hotel option. From here you can walk to light rail for MOA & airport access, I'd be shocked if a shuttle wouldn't leave from the MOA for the fair also if no closer option presents itself. You could also walk to First Ave. but during our stay they had a free shuttle to downtown locations. This may be an option for the Walker. This is a fun area with a great farmers market and restaurants and near the Gutherie Theatre also. Enjoy!!
