An Old Dowager of a Hotel

Although I was only in Red Wing for a few hours, I'd love to come back sometime and stay for a night or two at the St. James Hotel. It's a beautiful old hotel - well-preserved - that dates back to 1874 - which is a very long time in Minnesota History. It was built when Red Wing rivalled Minneapolis, and it was unclear which river city would emerge as dominant on the northern prairies.

Presently, the hotel is owned and operated by the Red Wing Shoe Company. It really is evidence that small towns like Red Wing benefit greatly by enlightened businesses which are owned and operated locally. It would (will?) be a very sad day if the shoe company is ever sold to a large multinational - which would probably sever its historic roots. Generally, international capitalism today has absolutely no room for - or sympathy with - local loyalties.
