Samuel Longhorn Clemens took...
Samuel Longhorn Clemens took his pen name from piloting these grand riverboat queens (this one is the Mississippi Queen) up and down the Mighty Mississippi River. The river depth and current change so rapidly that the riverboat pilots must constantly take depth soundings along the route to ensure their clearance. The measurement was called out to the pilot by citing the mark on the twain (line). Thus the name, Mark Twain.
These boats still steam up and down the river from St. Louis to New Orleans, and make for a unique vacation when time allows.
Jefferson Davis, president of...
Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America. Educated at the University of Transylvania and at West Point, New York. He was a classmate of General Robert E. Lee.
Served in the United States Senate and as Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce. Opposed Mississippi's seccession from the Union but accepted Presidency of the Confederacy when selected, although he preferred a military position.
Arrogant, disagreeable, unapproachable, and the wrong person to have as your president if you plan to succeed from the United States. In retrospect, much of the south's failure to win independence is attributable to this Mississippian.
Other factors in the South's failure to win the 'War of Northern Agression' include:
1. Should never have succeeded in the first place.
2. Succeeded before they were ready.
3. Outnumbered: South 9 million people. North 23 million.
4. Nation's industrial base was in the north, not the south.
5. The very nature of each state's desire for complete independence made onterstate cooperation difficult during the war.
Nevertheless, scratch any Mississippian just below the surface and you'll hear their favorite mantra, 'THE SOUTH SHALL RISE AGAIN!!!'
If you’ve ever wondered where...
If you’ve ever wondered where Elvis got those tunes, they came from just along the Mississippi River in what is called the Mississippi Delta, an agricultural portion of the state fed by an excessively rich diet of soil deposited along the shoreline by the Mississippi River .
The Mississippi Delta. Hot. Humid. Poor. Almost unbearable. It is a hard economic climate and even harder social climate, especially if you are black.
This is where rhythm and blues music was born. And Itta Bene, near Indianola, Mississippi, is where BB King was born on September 16, 1925.
In 1947, with $2.50 in his pocket, BB King left his home and parents for Memphis, Tennessee. He also started a legacy of the best blues guitar music the world has ever known.
It is truly a religious experience to hear BB King play Lucille, his guitar and longtime love. His first guitar was almost burned in a club fire. He ran back in to the club after he saw that he had forgotten it, named it Lucille and has called all of his guitars Lucille ever since.
He started by performing live on KWEM, a radio station out of West Memphis, under the name Beale Street Blues Boy, later changed his name to 'Blues Boy King' and finally shortened it to what we know today, the great B.B. King.
One of my favorite BB King lines is: (You have to sing this one to really get it)
“Nobody loves me but my mother…(big guitar rift)…... And sheeeeee could beeee jivin’ to.”
The Blues. Originated in Mississippi. Brought to us and portrayed by great, great musicians. BB King. Mississippi Red. Big Bill Bronsy. Sonny Terry and Brownie Magee. Robert Johnson. And a lot, Lot more. I love it.
Excuse me a minute. I’ve got to go home and turn on some CD’s. I’ll be back tomorrow.
From 'David's cool...
From 'David's cool Biloxi'.
This is a shot of Fort Massachusetts on Ship Island. One thing about the name Fort. Massachusetts, however. Although Massachusetts is a nice little state in the far north east corners of the USA, it is, as just mentioned, a northern state. The word 'northern' is written with italics, when used by a southerner! Having a northern namesake for a southern fort is a little disturbing to anyone from this far below the Mason Dixon line. Massachusetts is fine, but I'm changing the name to something a little more confederate as soon as I'm elected governor of Mississippi!!!

Was born in Brookhaven but grew up in Colorado. Moved in 2000. Very quiet here, but I like it a lot! brookhavenms.com is my site and some useful Brookhaven travel things on it also. The Amtrack train "City of New Orleans stops right downtown and makes for a great way to visit New Orleans.
