canton is located north of jackson in central mississippi. canton is the county seat of madison county mississippi. the town of canton was incorporated in 1836. there are two stories of how canton got it's name. one story is the canton is directly on the opposite side of the world from canton china. the other story is that a daughter of a chinese family died in the area and the town was named in their honor. canton was not directly involved in the civil war but there is a confederate cemetery near the courthouse. canton's courthouse square is listed on the national register of historic places and canton has a number of beautiful antebellum and post civil war homes. today canton has a vibrant downtown shopping and entertainment district due to the economic impact of a nearby nissan automotive plant. canton is also known as the "movie capital of mississippi". canton was the filming location site for "a time to kill". "the rising place". and "brother where art thou". canton is a very worth while side trip when traveling on I 55 in central mississippi.
one of canton's most famous residents was the blues singer and slide guitarist elmore james. canton is a stop on the mississippi blues trail.
