Freedom Summer, 1964
As was common in the south in the early 1960's, racial civil rights issues were being pushed to the forefront.
Hattiesburg was the site of the first inter-racial protest that resulted in zero arrests. Starting in January 1964 and lasting several months, hundreds and even thousands of people participated in these pickets. Despite having the planned outcome, progress was made.
Many of the participants rallied at key churches and locations known as Freedom Schools. Many of these have been demolished, but a few still remain.
If you are interested to read more or see some of these locations, the Visitor's Center has much better information.
