Ever stayed at the Edison Walthall Hotel? What's it like? Ever been to the St.Patrick's Day Parade (Sweet Potato Queens)? Any tips?
Walthall is ok. Older hotel. Probably the nicest downtown. Will be very close to the parade route, but I wouldn't walk to Hal & Mal's at night. Short cab ride, though. Not much else to do in that area, but great for the parade.

Oh, you also asked about the parade. It's a lot of fun. Folks from all over the country show up.
Definitely plan to be at Hal and Mal's before and after the parade. The Sweet Potato Queen herself holds court there and it's a great restaurant/bar. Red beans and rice is wonderful there as well as tamales.
Martin's across the street from H&Ms looks scary but isn't. GREAT beer selection there.
If you have time, you should think about a trip to Natchez and possibly Vicksburg. Esp. if you're into antebellum architecture.
