Mississippi War Memorial
by atufft
There is a fine granite memorial to Mississippi veterans of wars fought. Substantial artwork is represented in the cast metal relief of the Monitor vs Merrimack battle, Vicksburg, and other battles fought during the Civil War and variouis international conflicts. Built in 1940 and recently renovated at taxpayer expense, the memorial includes a replica of the tomb of the unknown soldier.

"Just passing through..."
Our route through town: We drove through Jackson while traveling to and from Arkansas in July 2008. We took US 49 (from/to Hattiesburg) to I-20 (to/from Vicksburg). The two roads meet southeast of the downtown area.
Observations: While Jackson is not a large metropolis it is the capital of Mississippi and the only city in the state with a population greater than 100,000. That said, it does boast a small skyline of short skyscrapers and a gold-domed capitol building. Unfortunately, if you are traveling on I-20 you will have to look off to the north past intermittent obstructions if you want to catch quick glimpses of these.
Our suggested pit stop: If you are traveling through and need to stop somewhere decent for a meal, lodging or a restroom break, stop in Clinton. It is a nice suburban college town just west of Jackson on I-20. Clinton boasts a smattering of establishments just outside the campus of Mississippi College. We stopped for lunch at Zaxby's. If you are taking US 49 in or out of Jackson, the city of Richland, just south of town, is also very commercialized.
