Travel Tips for Natchez

Old Natchez Jail

by Stephen-KarenConn

Directly across the street from the Adams County Courthouse is the Historic Natchez Jail, which dates back to 1891. It is located at 314 State Street, across the street from the Adams County Courthouse.

The old jail is not a tourist attraction but a working office, currently the Board of Supervisors Building for Adams County Administration. The building is well preserved and still shows signs of its former use, with bars covering some of the upstairs windows.

Support the troops

by Helga67

We were in Natchez during the War in Iraq. In many places, we saw yellow ribbons and US flags hanging outside around a tree or a fence or whatever was available. It is an American custom of showing their sympathie and support to the troops.

Emerald Mound

by leafmcgowan

Ancestors of the Natchez built this ceremonial mound about 1400. The nation's second largest of its type, it covers nearly 8 acres. Only Monk's Mound in Cahokia, Illinois, is larger. This 8 acre mound, constructed from a natural hill, was built and used from about 1300 to 1600 by the Mississippians, ancestors of the Natchez Indians. Unlike dome-shaped mounds constructed only for burials, Emerald Mound supported Temples, ceremonial structures, and burials of a complex society's civic and religious leaders.

Longwood Mansion

by BruceDunning

This is another tragedy in the time of the Civil War. Most laborers were brought here from the north and Italy to do the work, when it started in 1859-bad timing- They stayed until the final day when the war broke out and after if was over, the family was broke and out of funds. The father, Haller Nutt, had died during the war and one son.
The building is octagon shape, and was to be 6 storied with the observatory on top. Intent was for 32 rooms on about 15000 SF. Imagine the beauty if finished. What a shame. This could have been a stand out of the proud Old South if completed.
It is called the "oriental villa". Nutt completed only the basement level to live in during the war. The family lived in the cellar until 1897. Children/heirs owned until 1968 and now maintained by Pilgrimage Garden Club.

Walking tour: St Mary's Cathedral

by tompt

In 1837 Natchez was designated as the capitol of the Roman Catholic Church in Mississippi. The construction of this cathedral began in 1842. It is the only church in Mississippi that was constructed as a cathedral. It was built in the elaborate Gothic Revival Style. The interiour was finished more than 10 years later.
