"tupelo"
the town of tupelo was originally called gum pond due to it's large number of tupelo trees in the area. after the battle of tupelo in 1864 the name of the town was changed to tupelo. tupelo was incorporated in 1870 and is the county seat of lee county mississippi. today the economy of tupelo is dominated by a toyota automoble manufacturing plant and tourism.
many tourists visit tupelo the visit the birthplace of elvis presley. elvis presley was born in tupelo in 1935. elvis presley's birthplace is open to the public and thousands of his fans make a "pilgramage" to this site each year.
an interesting character in u. s. crime history is george kelly barnes, better known as machine gun kelly. machine gun kelly robbed the tupelo citizens state bank in november 1932. this robbery was the last one machine gun kelly committed before his arrest and imprisonment.
