Thayers Approach to Conferderate Redoubt
Of the nearly 17,000 Union soldiers buried here, about 13,000 are unknown. Established in 1866, the cemetery is also the final resting place for veterans of the Spanish-American War, World Wars I & II, and the Korean Conflict. It was closed to burials in 1961. Many Confederates who died during the seige are buried in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
the christ episcopal church is one of several historic churches in downtown vicksburg. leonidas polk, the bishop of alabama and louisiana laid the corner stone of christ episcopal in 1830. leonidas polk was a cousin of president james k. polk and a friend of jefferson davis. during the civil war polk was a confederate general and was nicknamed "the fighting bishop". polk was killed in action during the atlanta campaign in 1864. christ episcopal church was completed in 1843 and survived the seige of vicksburg. a beautiful and historic church to visit in downtown vicksburg.
An excellent ghost tour, the guide leads you throuh the heart of "old town Vicksburg" you hear creepy stories of the horrors of the seige, and hauntings both old and new. bring your camera, you won't believe what the camera some times picks up. call 601-618-6031
