THE TOURIST TRAP OF THE MIDWEST
"Getting around"
My main piece of advice is to stay off of the 76 strip if at all possible; it is SO CROWDED! getting into traffic is very hard from resturants or motels.
My advice is to get a map before you get into town (they have them at the convienent stores) of the alternate routes and take those as much as possible.
"Eating!"
I only have two places to recommend besides the standard resturants:
1) Charlies steak and ribs:
Great food and great entertainment! This place sits way off the main road and you can EASILY miss it the first time, it is on the north side of the road, by the hollywood wax works I believe, and it is closer to the east end of the strip. There is a sign by the road but it is small and you have to look for it - the food is worthy of the effort!
2)Second is a great out of the way "lunch and a show". I can't remember the name but it is like hard rock cafe or something but not hard rock (you know?) it is located in the grand village shopping complex and has some of the best talent in town and at a price you wont believe ( 6.00 for a burger and drink - factor in the entertainment and it can't be beat!)
The only other advice I can give is to get off the main drag and see the sights... there are many other places to eat once your off the main road!
"STEAL YOUR DOLLAR CITY!"
Yes that is what they do folks! EVERYTHING is over priced! When they charge you $1.50 for a small bottle of water you know your in for the financial ride of your life!
My advice is this: Take a backpack filled with munchies and water, you can eat at the city if you want but just be forwarned your gonna pay for it. Having said that I usually take $100.00 with me just for food - NOW I DON'T SPEND THAT MUCH, but I only go for the food nowadays.
My recommendations for food are the fried potato man near the americana theater and the skillets which will be cooking everywhere you walk. The resturants near the entrance are Ok to eat at but I think they are too small for a family to eat at.
The rides are fun but be prepared to get wet because you can't get away from it if you ride any of the rides, make sure you are in shape also! the streets are very hilly and young children can get away from you and get tired very quickly.
One of the tricks you will see in the city are the use of walkie talkies or the like... they are all over and you can never tell who your talking to so be prepared for that little pitfall.
Other than these downsides, GO AND ENJOY YOURSELF!
Word of advice: I haven't heard anything good yet on the amusement park outside the city, EVERYONE so far has said it wasn't worth the extra money, so make up your own minds whether to spend the money or not.
Hope this all helps those new to the experience.
PS: The evening show in the hollar is worth the time if you have it!
