Travel Tips for Kansas City

The Plaza at Christmas

by NorineP

One of the nicest views of the Plaza is during the Christmas season. All the buildings are lit up with thousands of lights. When it snows, it is so beautiful. It's a great place to shop for Christmas presents when the snow is gently falling.

This isn't my picture, but I will have one of my own soon

Beautiful Tree Lined Street

by RoscoeGregg

30 to 40 years ago many of the grand huge American Elm trees were killed by Dutch Elm Disease. The City Foresters took the opportunity to plant a great variety of beautiful hardwood trees.

The trees have now matured to the point that they turn many streets into a kind of living cathedral.

If you visit in mid to late October it is truly spectacular. The streets in and around the Brookside area are the best. So take a walk through a great American neighborhood.

The Graceful Lockheed Super-Constellation

by basstbn

The dolphin-shaped Lockheed Super-Constellation is the centerpiece of the Airline History Museum. When it is not being flown to an air show in another city, you can tour the plane, itself. It was a marvel of engineering for its day. And though noisy to ride, it was far more comfortable than today's cramped airliners. The Constellation was the last great propeller airliner before the introduction of the jet airliner.

Other airliners on display are a Martin 404 and a TWA DC-3 still undergoing restoration. The former offices of the hangar contain interesting exhibits of airline memorabilia and a neat little gift shop.

Last - a word about the tour guides. Rarely will you find yourself in a tour group of any kind where the guide is so knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. The guides are the members of the foundation - the guys and gals who spend hours upon hours babying and/or restoring these precious aircraft, even spending their own money to buy parts when the cash flow runs short. They know and love every inch of sheet metal. Kudos and thanks to these hard-working, dedicated craftsmen and women for preserving part of our heritage.

This little town has some old time charm in its main street. It is almost a commuter town for Lawrence, or Kansas City these days-about 20 miles either distance to each. The town founded in 1857 by sale of 80 acres by a Shawnee Indian to Mr. Legate. It wsasa river town and did fairly well until late 1800's. A revival came when Sunflower Ammunition Plant came to town, and it employs thousands. Today the town has 6,000 residents. Abbot Hall named after an original founder is used as a museum

Two Westport Night Spots

by basstbn about Stanford and Sons and Kelly's

The Westport area has become Kansas City's Party Central - when the city celebrates, it happens here, even if the occasion is just Friday night. Once a stop for provisions on the old Santa Fe, Oregon, and California Trails, Westport is now home to numerous clubs and restaurants.

Stanford and Sons KC's premier spot for comedy and features some of the country's best standup comics. Kelly's has been one of the best known "watering holes" in town for years. The building itself is one of the oldest in Kansas City, once home to a store operated by a grandson of Daniel Boone. I have heard stories that the basement still contains chains and shackles used to hold runaway slaves who were captured prior to America's Civil War.
