3 day vacation to kC
by mattclark
This will be my first time to KC. I have 3 days to spend there and was wondering what the best area and/or hotel would be to stay in. I will not have a car so I really need to be in walking distance to shopping, touring, and nightlife. Can you offer any suggestions?

Listen to The Man: Giampiero is absolutely right. The Plaza is the real urban center of K.C. A second choice or option would be the Westport District. It's edgier, more youthful and "hip" than the Plaza - and also cheaper. Less shopping, fewer national "chains" - but plenty going on, especially in the way of nightlife.
Travel Tips for Kansas City
Meeting a legend
by sambarnett
Meeting baseball legend Buck O'Neil at the Negro League Baseball Museum. I was as nervous as can be but that all disappeared when he shook my hand, asked what my name was and personally thanked me for visiting the museum. He didn't do that for the thirty other people there that morning. That, my friends, is what you call an honor.
The American Royal Parade
by yooperprof
Kansas City is proud of its Cowtown heritage - sort of. The American Royal is the annual Livestock Show and Conference that is held every year in the West Bottoms, next to where the stockyards used to be. Every year there is a parade to honor the American Royal - I believe it is traditionally held on the third weekend of October. It's fun to see horses and tractors and cowboys in the city!
Airline History Museum
by basstbn
Once you finally find Hangar 9 at the old Kansas City (downtown) airport, you take a look at its unspectacular exterior and wonder if you're wasting your time. If, however, you have any interest or curiosity about an earlier age of airline travel, you will find this to be a fascinating and educational tour.
Kansas City was once home to TWA and because of its overhaul base here, there have been a huge number of dedicated and skilled workmen retire here. When the opportunity came for a group of these men to and women to acquire a Lockheed Constellation aircraft, they jumped at the chance. They spent years bringing their beloved bird back to flying condition. This organization (Save-a-Connie Foundation) and this beautiful aircraft are the foundation of the airline history museum.

BAldwin City-Baker University
by BruceDunning
This is a real treat to go back in time. The college anchors the old time town. There are about 1,000 students, and the university is steeped in history, along with the town. Founded in 1858 by Methodist ministers. The town was founded in 1870, and expanded with many Victorian style homes in early 1900's; with a current population of 3,400. They have 60 on the historic register. Every fall in the 3rd week of October they have a Maple Festival, which brings 30,000 from around the area to partake in festivities.
Brookside Beer Bash
by yooperprof about Charlie Hooper's
I used to stop in here occasionally after work twenty years ago. It's kinda a college place for UMKC students - and Jesuits from Rockhurst who are still scared of bars on Troost - but it has a distinctive downmarket charm that is refreshing in the midst of the strivers of Brookside. I like the outdoor patio - and they have some nice Boulevard brews on tap, too.
