Christmas in KC

by uk_in_kc

I have been living and working in KC for most of this year. I have just found out I will be here over Christmas and my family is gonig to visit. Any good places to go for Christmas and New Years?

The Country Club Plaza will be all lit up with a brilliant display of Christmas lights and decorations - it's a regional tradition to go down and look at the Plaza Lights during the holiday season.

Crown Center also decorates extensively in December. I've always enjoyed going ice skating at the Crown Center open-air rink. (I don't live in Kansas City now, but I grew up there, and I go back every year for Xmas with the family.)

Travel Tips for Kansas City

Try some of the local brews....

by sargentjeff

Try some of the local brews. Kansas city is home to some of the best beers I've had in the US. Boulevard Pale Ale is fantastic. Also eat some KC Barbeque, it's world famous Eating a 100 wing dinner at Hooters with a few of my Army buddies. We were almost sick after this endeavor.

Sculpture - "Boss" Pendergast overlooks the River

by yooperprof

James Pendergast (1856-1911) established a political "machine" that dominated Kansas City politics for half a century. He was the oldest of four brothers each of whom was involved in running the city from the 1890s through the end of the 1930s. And when I say that they ran the city, I also mean that they controlled elections and determined which businesses in the city would succeed or fail.

The youngest Pendergast brother, Tom, gave a humble haberdasher named Harry Truman his first breaks in local politics in the 1920s. Pendergast was ultimately brought down by charges of income tax evasion in 1939.

This statue of James sits at Clark Point, at 8th and Jefferson in the downtown freeway loop, overlooking the West Bottoms. (It is close to the Lewis & Clark memorial, but you could overlook it if you weren't looking for it.) The memorial was commissioned by the city in the 1920s, and executed by well-known artist Frederick C. Hibbard. (Hibbard had studied with Lorado Taft in Chicago.)

Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden

by cheap_tourist

My cousin felt compelled to show me this garden. Like most gardens, it offers a refuge from city life. If you are so inclined, you can sit there and ponder on the secrets of the universe. Aside from beautiful flowers, it also has fine sculptures and fountains.

Admission to the garden is free. Its address is 4800 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, Missouri.

TWA Building

by yooperprof

Renovated office space now - home of a major advertizing company - this was once an operational center for Kansas City's "hometown airline." And my Dad used to work here, back in the day! I like how they've cleaned it up, polished up the red panels, and returned to the streamlined look of the 1960s.

And you have to love the TWA Rocket on the building's roof!

At 1735 Baltimore, in the Crossroads District.

Live Theatre

by basstbn about Missouri Repertory Theatre

There is a lot of live theatre in Kansas City, and "The Rep" is its premier organization. This fully professional resident theatre company presents six performances annually, including the incredibly popular "Christmas Carol" - a must see during the holiday season. The rep was founded in 1964 and performs in the Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Free parking.
