LOL Thanks for picking up my typo. Apologies if my response caused any upset but good to see the question got a good answer.
BTW my nick is mgmarcus not mqmarcus, not that I am so pedantic for it to matter to me.
Travel Tips for Kansas City
Come in, sit down, let's chat
by shdw100
Some of my family lives here, so I love getting together, having dinner, and then chatting after for awhile about everything. Usually the living room is the place to have the social hour. So, if your ever in town, come in, sit down, and let's chat!
Sculpture - Ilus Davis statue
by yooperprof
Ilus Davis (1917-1996) was mayor of Kansas City through the difficult 1960s, including the time of the terrible riots of 1968 (following ML King's assassination) when half a dozen people were killed. But his period in office was marked by constructive growth for the city, as he helped lay the foundations for the development of Kansas City International Airport in the northland, and the Harry Truman Sports Complex east of the Blue River.
His statue stands appropriate in front of City Hall downtown (414 E. 12th Street). The work of California artist Bruce Wolf, the statue is on a four foot pedestal, and stands nine feet tall! (It was unveiled in 2003.)
Not your usual film
by kbsunnyside
Tivoli theater at 4050 Pennsylvania Avenue.
It's hidden--look at 4050 and you'll see Tizers. To the right are double glass doors that look like the entrance to an office building. The box office is right inside.
It's not stadium seating, but they get good current movies, price is $5.00 Saturday afternoon and the usher asks how you liked the movie and says goodbye when you leave.
Linda Hall Library of Science and Technology
by yooperprof
The Linda Hall Library of Science and Technology is an independent research library located in the middle of the UMKC campus. Use of the library is free and open to the public. Linda Hall has regular exhibitions highlighting their superb collection of rare scientific books and maps. And it's a beautiful place, too. There are comfortable tables and desks, and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook a well-maintained botanical garden. You don't have to be into science or technology to come here.
People in Kansas City have several misconceptions about the Linda Hall Library. For one thing, it is often thought that this is part of the UMKC campus. No - it's completely independent. Linda Hall operates with a large private endowment that guarantees its financial stability. Secondly, it is often assumed that "Linda Hall" was somehow related to the Hall family of Hallmark fame. No, these Halls were grain merchants.
Yooperprof worked here between 1988 and 1990 while writing and revising his doctoral dissertation. I was a library page, retrieving "closed stack" journals, occasionally guarding the front desk, and in charge of shelving and reshelving a section of the large periodical collection. I was responsible for the H's and I's.
More Blue's
by HJ_ about Blue Room
If you are looking to see Kansas City back in the day when Charlie Parker roamed the streets looking for a jazz fix, stop by the Blue Room. Although the original Blue Room, where the Bird blew saxophone is long gone, this jazz joint is a fine replica of a 1930s club. Located in the historic 18th and Vine district, it is a bit of a museum, with pictures of greats covering the walls and relics of Kansas City's jazz era adorning the tables. Live music still gets the place swinging four nights a week. No food is available and smoking is not allowed, but a full bar is available.
