At one time, the Santa Fe trail began here as pioneers headed west to settle the vast acreages of Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado, and Arizona. Nowadays, Westport is Kansas City's bar spot, with such perennial favorites as Have a Nice Day Cafe (found in every mid-major city in North America). It's also got a few groovy shops and hangout locations. But really, it's there for the bars.
And to watch KC'ers bemoan their gawd-awful sports teams. The soccer team, the Wizards, won the MLS last year. It was the city's first championship since George Brett led the 1985 Royals to the Missouri Series championship over the Cardinals. Hockey? The Scouts left town, eventually becoming the Stanley Cup-winning New Jersey Devils. Basketball? Surely you've seen the high-flying Sacramento (formerly KC) Kings. Throw in the American League baseball Athletics, now in Oakland, and Kansas City has lost as many pro teams as it has kept. Oh well...
