Federal Courthouse
by yooperprof
There'a new Federal Courthouse in downtown K.C. Mo. The City has created a new "civic plaza" in front of it - a green space two city blocks in size - and the grass and flowers are certainly an improvement on the empty buildings and surface parking lots which they replaced.
The new Courthouse is designed in the "bunker" or fortress style which I've seen at other new Federal facilities across the USA. It's understandable why they have to be built this way - sadly.
Strolling the Plaza - The Brush Creek Walkway

The Country Club Plaza has been Kansas City's favorite spot for a stroll for many decades. It's an intergenerational, multi-ethnic activity, too - if you're in to people watching, you'll see all we have to offer. You can also window shop in the finest stores, lounge around a fountain listening to KC jazz by the best local players (weekend afternoons in the summer), or dine in some great eateries.
A favorite place to walk is along Brush Creek. You can walk streetside, or right next to the stream, itself.
On September 13, 1977, a ferocious flash flood caused by 16 inches of rain in two days roared through this area drowning more than 25 people and causing millions of dollars of damage. As a result, the city and the corp of engineers redesigned the creek bed. It is now much safer and far more beautiful than before that awful evening.
This charming sculpture, "New Friends," of two children playing with birds, sits along the walkway.
Excelsior Springs

This is becoming a bit of a bedroom community for Kansas City workers downtown. It is 25 miles north of the city, but holds a quiet and serene setting for growing up a family. The main attraction is the old Elms Resort hotel. It started back in 1888. Now they celebrate 120 years July 2009 for first opening. It is a natural mineral springs, and has attracted thousands to take in the cure. The structure was on 50 acres, now just about 2. The hotel burned down in 1898, and 1910; so they built the next out of limestone. It has been shut down a couple of times since, and still struggles. The insides and the old ambiance is the main site here, as well as taking in your own private bath area, in addition to public pool areas you can swim. It has 152 rooms, and is somewhat "condominiumized"
The four sky sculptures a top...

The four sky sculptures a top Bartle Hall make it easy to find this landmark. Bartle Hall is a large exhibit center and convention place. I've been there twice. The last time was to see a boat show. Before that the Smithsonian had an exhibit there. The great thing about Bartle Hall is there was not room to build it. To make room it was built like a giant bridge over the highway. It is near Broadway street in down town KC, MO.
Jazz
by basstbn about The Blue Room
The Blue Room was right in the middle of where it was all happening back in those wild days of the 30's - when the music went all night and into the morning. Since its opening in 1997, it has become a jazz museum by day, and a working jazz club by night. Smoking is prohibited in order to preserve precious artifacts, but drinks are served at the bar. Open Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Check for times. Admission $5
