Kauffman Stadium
by basstbn
Home of the American League's Kansas City Royals, Kauffman Stadium remains one of the country's most beautiful venue in which to watch a baseball game. In recent years since the death of long-time owner Ewing Kauffman, the team's years of glory and success have given way to years of futility. However, a recent change in management has left fans cautiously optimistic.
Ewing and Muriel Kauffman were great for Kansas City. Not only did they bring championship Major League Baseball to KC, but they cared deeply for the city and its peoples. They contributed mightily to such causes as education for the poor and for the arts.
Stockton Lake
by BruceDunning
This is a large, but quite lake close to KC. It has been a tradition for people to buy small weekend homes there and fishing is the primary reason to visit, besides the peaceful and quite surroundings. Not much is in the area, and you may want to bring your own "viddles" food because convenience store items get old soon. Beer and chewing tobacco.
KC is 136 miles to the north
Classical Music
by basstbn about Kansas City Symphony
Kansas City's classical music scene is surprisingly strong - and as with most cities, the symphony orchestra is at the center. Currently led by dynamic young conductor, Anne Manson, the symphony is undergoing a wonderful surge of artistic growth, and is one of those rare orchestras not facing financial difficulties. The only drawback is the current performance venue, The Lyric Theatre, which is cramped and unappealing. In 2006 or 2007 it will be replaced by an architectural wonder - the new Kansas City Performing Arts Center. Students receive drastically reduced prices within two hours of the performance. Anything goes... Tux, blue jeans, just leave the baby with a sitter.
Thai without the burn- soooo good!
by asturnut about Malay Cafe
The Malay Cafe is a delightful suprise. It's a small kitschy restaurant tucked into the endless landscape of strip malls on Barry Road. But the location and appearance belie the culinary experience that awaits you!
Malaysian food is similar in content and flavor to Thai food without the signature burn that some people find off-putting. The chef/owner Alison has mastered the complex and subtle flavors of Malaysian cusine. We began our dinner with Spring and Summer rolls. The fried Spring Roll was amazingly light with a dainty filling of meat, cabbage and rice vermicelli. The gracious bowl of "Soup Noodle" I enjoyed with my daughter could have fed an entire family. The light chicken broth was complemented with lemon grass, homemade noodles and a delicious assortment of vegetables. For the first time in my life I experienced a "light" vegetable curry that was so delicious! Although it was only a sidedish, I could have enjoyed it alone and had been satisfied. My main course, Royal Almond Chicken (almond crusted fried chicken bites in coconut sauce) was just beyond words. You'll have to try it for yourself.
Lunch special is a great deal- $6.95 for an entree and the wonderful House Soup.
Summary: Yum. Impeccible service. Oustanding food. Cheap.
Usually when I travel, I do not return to the same place again, but I always visit the Malay Cafe multiple times when I am in KC.
