Colonnade Apartments
by yooperprof
There are many examples of this style of apartment building in Kansas City. Blocks of "flats" with this general form were constructed from 1900 to about 1930. Basically, there are six apartments in each building, with each apartment having not only a generously sized front porch, but also a back balcony overlooking a courtyard. These "colonnade" apartments (now desirable condos) are on 43rd Street just to the east of Main, close to the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
Cabela's Freshwater Aquarium
by AlbuqRay
The Aquarium is to the right as you walk into the store. It has a walk-through tank area. There are 65,000 gallons of water and hundreds of fish native to the Midwest, even including albino catfish.
The 18th and Vine Historic District
by Tom_Fields
The 18th and Vine Historic District has one of the best music museums around. It also has jazz and blues festivals during late summer. Also good night life. Robert Altman, a KC native, shot his movie Kansas CIty in this area. It's now the home of the Mutual Musicians Foundation.
It's best, if you plan to stay in town, to hire a cab to get there and back. Parking is often a problem and the surrounding areas are crime-ridden even during the day.
For more information, contact the Mutual Musicians Foundation at:

Lakeside Nature Center is in a brand new building in Swope Park near the zoo. It is a wonderful place with educational and interesting displays. For me this place is a must see activity. I included it in the off the beaten path section because I know not every one is as big a nature nut as I am.
Hang Out

Piano bar, but much more. Always a duo or combo after 8:00ish. Food is nice and the atmosphere is relaxed. I note that it's pretty dark and it may be a little hard to read your menu.
The waitstaff is outgoing and isn't afraid to recommend. And the bartender knows how to make a drink
Only open Wednesday - Saturday nights. chili with a side salad
