Cool neighborhoods in KC area?

by suzer

My sister is moving to the Kansas City area for a job. Can someone suggest cool neighborhoods for a young single professional (KS or MO)? She wants to buy a small house, preferrably something older (20's to 40's build).

Zip codes would be helpful, as she's been looking online. Thanks!

I would suggest checking what are known as the Valentine and Brookside areas in mid-town Kansas City, MO; or the close-in suburb of Westwood, Kansas. These places really have a lot of charming older homes and neighborhoods with a lot of character. If the house option doesn't work out, she might want to consider a loft (or the occasional town house) in the Quality Hill, Garment District, River Market, or Crown Center & Union Hill areas. Lots of young professionals living in these parts of town. I know she will find great places to live, work, and play in KC. It's a great town.

Travel Tips for Kansas City

See the Plaza, a recreation of...

by noahsdad

See the Plaza, a recreation of Seville, built by some obsessed American developer in (I think) the 1920s. Complete with fountains and filigreed froufrou, the Plaza has kind of an artificial feel, but the shopping, eating, and even the relaxation by a bubbling fountain are quite real. Don't miss the barbecue and KC's jazz heritage, situated as it is along the New Orleans/Chicago axis.

Wizard of Oz

by cheap_tourist

You might find a lot of Wizard of Oz items in the souvenir stores. It's because Dorothy was a Kansas native. If you've seen the movie, you'll know that she spent her entire time in the land of Oz trying to get back to her beloved family in Kansas.

Writer's Place

by Camille_W

Writer's Place is where Kansas City's writers and poets gather to learn, to read, to listen and to write. It is located in an old house in the Valentine neighborhood, about halfway between Westport and Penn Valley Community College.

Writer's Place offers readings, an art gallery, and resources for writers.

Parkville

by BruceDunning

This is a nice river town in its old heh day. The steep hills climb form the old shores of the much larger river back then. The town has had its share of floods, and devastated the old buildings. The last was about 10 years ago, and nearly closed up the town

Art Gallery's

by HJ_ about Crossroads Arts District

The first Friday of every month you can walk around the Crossroads Art District and find a culmination of art galleries, studios, and restaurants in the Crossroads Arts District.
Some of the studios even offer free wine and samplings of food. Its alot of fun just to walk around with friends and mingle and see amazing artists. Summer and Spring months are the most crowded and gallerys stay open 7-9 and free admission.
