An Invaluable Resource...

If you're going to be in the KC area for awhile, or live here wanting to get to know the surrounding areas a little better, be sure to look over my pages about neighboring towns, but also pick up a copy of Shifra Stein's "Day Trips from Kansas City - Getaways Less than Two Hours Away."
Stein has been writing about destinations around KC for quite a few years, and she has compiled an excellent list of fun-to-read recommendations. Choices range from the curious and whimsical to historical to places of natural beauty. Includes great tips for inexpensive to moderately priced eating that allow you to find some great local spots without breaking the bank.
I found the book at Border's in Overland Park, Kansas, but available lots of places. Or you could check out the publishers web site if you're not in the area: www.globe-pequot.com
Celebrate KC - Memorial Day Celebration
by Jewelslover
We went to a wonderful celebration at the Union Station downtown Kansas City. It was for the Memorial Day holiday. They had the Kansas City Symphony play a patriotic concert, then there were fireworks over Liberty Memorial afterwards. They announced that there were 24,000 people attending the event this year. This was a free performance.
Check out my Kansas City Travelogues for more pictures of this event.
LDS Visitors Center
by shdw100
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) owns a visitor's center here. Back in the early 1830's, missionaries from the church came here to proselyte. Eventually, the church's founder, Joseph Smith, Jr., said that the church was susposed to be based in Independence, Missouri. So, the majority of the church moved from Kirtland, Ohio to here. Because of the large number of church members moving in, the local people were not pleased. Religious persecution followed, driving the Mormons out of Independence, and eventually out of the state of Missouri. The visitor's center focuses on the history of the church in Missouri, as well as aspects of their beliefs. During Christmas, the place is lit up with thousands of lights, and a gingerbread display with hundreds of gingerbread houses is shown inside. Admission is free and is open from 9am to 9pm.
Also not far from The Plaza...
by slabeaume
Also not far from The Plaza are residential areas with some unbelievably beautiful houses! This one used to be privately owned, but is now one of the 3 mansions aquired by UMKC for classrooms. This is the Epperson house which is where the architecture students have their classes.

the country club plaza lighting ceremony...
every year, they put christmas lights on all over the plaza. it's really pretty and makes walking down there at night enjoyable, if you can stand the cold. they have a big ceremony at thanksgiving (last thursday in november) when the lights are turned on. i went to it one year expecting it to be really stupid and full of hype. i was happily surprised... it was magical. the moment when the lights came on was amazing.. everything around me had been transformed from medicore and drab to sparkly and beautiful. i would definitely go back, if i'm ever in kansas city at that time of year. lots of very warm clothes
