Travel Tips for Kearney

Purchase a Piece of History (Maybe)

by mrclay2000

Prowlers through the Mt Olivet graveyard looking for Jesse James will eventually come across an odd sign. The sign purports to direct the visitor to a nearby merchant in order to "buy a piece of the tree that shaded Jesse James." If in fact James is buried in Mt Olivet, the purchase might seem sensible to collectors. If not, the tree cube would be no more valuable than a chunk of tofu, just another hoax in American lore.

Jesse James Memorabilia

by mrclay2000

A true James' enthusiast would visit all the associated places in Kearney before venturing the short hour and change to St Joseph. There, apart from a wealth of historical wonders, the visitor can tour the small home in which James was murdered in 1882. Though relocated to its new position near the Pony Express Offices, the home still begs the visitor to "see the bullet hole."

Jesse James

"What to Say?"

I came here for a weekend with my then-boyfriend. While he worked, I entertained myself by going to the Jesse James farm. Having been raised in California (not quite the Wild West...), I've always been fascinated with Old West Outlaws in general, and Jesse & Frank James in particular. Hollywood spin at it's best, but I fell in love with Jesse in the movie wherein he was portrayed by Tyrone Power...

Kearny former home of the infamous Jesse James

by asturnut

If you're in the Kansas City area and interested in history, take a pleasant drive through the rolling green hills of northwestern Missouri for a detour to Kearny. Kearny is the former home of the notorious bank robber Jesse James. Visitors come from far and wide, as I have for many years since I was a child, to visit the James homestead. A small fee will gain visitors entrance to a small museum that houses James family memorabilia. There are sorts of interesting items on display, some of which are not a little shocking! (I'm not telling… you need to see if for yourself.) Similarly, a ticket is required for guided tours of the James' home. As a person who is fascinated by the past, I always find the tour of the home the most enjoyable part of my visit to Kearny.

It is worth mentioning that although the museum and shop are handicap accessible, the James home is not.

Kearney Is What Kearney Was

by mrclay2000

"Gunman, Foundry, Soldier, Hive"

Kearney was originally laid out as Centerville in the 1850s, though the James Farm is dated to 1845. Then as now a place for farms and pasture, Kearney is located about sixteen miles north of Kansas City on I-35. Off US-92 there are some attractions of note for the outsider but somewhat sprawled out in this interesting town.

Residency here numbered about 5,500 citizens in the last census. Today the town's websites boasts only two important attractions, thankfully located only a few miles apart.
