Has anyone had any issues with swimming in the swim area at Frankie and Louie's at Sunrise beach? I don't think the water quality has been tested and given that it's at the end of a long cove with a lot of boats, gas pump and pretty populated on the weekends, I am not sure how the harmful bacteria and pollution gets out of there! We wouldn't let our kids swim in the water due to this concern.
Henry, I think I would either stick to boating, or take the kids to one of the water parks this summer. Both swimming beaches at the state park have been closed the majority of the summer and the other testings have left a bit to be desired. E coli seems to be the main culprit. Gary
Lake of the Ozarks is a beautiful place (I used to live in Missouri), but water quality has to be tested by the officials - I wonder if you should forward this concern to their city officials. Here in Arizona, we also have E coli warnings at the Slide Rock State Park sometimes. Park officials issue such warnings. Thanks for posting this as this may prevent other travellers/kids in the area from getting sick, Norman :)
You might wish to utilize the following web site for lake area information: (www.lakenewsonline.com/communities). You can click on Sunrise Beach and see if there are any recent test results listed. The overall June testing results were much better than those in May, but the Public Beach # 2 at the state park is still closed. That is a long way from Sunrise Beach though. According to the state agencies "overseeing" the testing the nastiness is mainly caused by heavy rainfall washing "waste" from various systems around the lake into the lake, and also, animal droppings. For myself, I think the waste systems are a problem of shoddy construction and layout. They leak and overflow regardless of the weather. I'm also having difficulty believing that animal "by products" can cause that big a problem. Gary
Norman, they do have testing, by the Department of Natural Resources, at least monthly, from April through October, in about 60 locations around the lake. Lake Ozark officials are quite aware of the problem as the city itself has been fined at least twice for water quality "transgressions". Gary
Seems that the sate department in charge of testing is in trouble for holding the bad test results for this summer. Their initial response was they held it because it might have been bad press for the lake community.
