Main Street Montage - Old Post Office
No longer used as a postal branch, this building now houses a variety of offices. Its quite similar in design to the old post office in Alton IL, which is sadly standing vacant. It's interesting to contrast the two old river towns - there's certainly a lot more activity in St. Charles.
Points of Interest in Saint Charles
"Places of Interest We SAW; Did Not Visit"
Jill and I were only in Saint Charles for one full day, one night, and a few hours the next morning: therefore, we could not possibly visit all the places of interest. We saw and took pictures of some we did not visit.
The photo shows The St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church at 1424 First Capitol Drive South.
"Moved to a New Location"
The KATY Depot Originally built in 1892 to serve the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad) has been restored to its orginal splendor and moved to the Frontier Park. The restoration took place in 1978.
"Starting Point of Katy Trail State Park"
The Frontier Park at 500 Riverside Drive is 16 acres on the riverfront and the head (start) of the Katy Trail.
The park is one block from the historic distric and a favorite with picnickers, cyclists , and joggers.
"New Lewis & Clark Boat House & Nature Center"
The Discovery Expedition of Saint Charles operates the new Lewis & Clark Boat House and Nature Center at 2 Bishop's Landing, 1050 Riverside Drive, (636)947-3199.
It is a certified site of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail. This is a perfect location on the banks of the Missouri River at Bishop's Landing (only a five minute walk to downtown historic district).
They have hand-crafted replicas of boats used by the Corps of Discovery and exhibits concerning the Missouri River ecosystem, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The lower level of the Boat House is where the keelboat and two "pirogues" are kept. It has a flow through design to permit the boats to be easily removed when the river floods.
