carving pic
by TeeKaye
My friend told me about taking the tour of the brewery and said he saw a carving of a brewery worker on a cornerstone of the building. He says it was a man with a mug of beer in one hand and something to eat in the other. The thing that set it off was that the "worker" had the head of a rat, as he recalls. If anyone has a pic of this, I would appreciate seeing it and any info if a replica can be purchased.
Thanks

There are numerous sculptures on the brewery similar to that one. I remember hearing or reading about them but I cannot remember either the story behind them or where I heard it. If I remember correctly, there is a sculpture of each of the crafts that used to be employeed at the brewery. I will ask a few ex-brewery employees to see what they know.
Travel Tips for Saint Louis
Eads Bridge
by Toughluck
Finished in 1874, this was the first bridge across the Mississippi. It is built of structural steel and it's abutments were built using pnuematic cassions, the deepest ever reached at that time. There are two levels. The lower level for railroad and the upper level for cars. As traffic increased, the railroad level was closed. In the 1990's, it was rehabilitated for use by a light rail public transportation system connection the airport with downtown and East St. Louis, Illinois. Later the traffic lane was shut down and there was talk of making it a pedestrian walkway. I don't know what was done.

Downtown - Board of Education Bldg. (1891)
by yooperprof
Constructed to house the St. Louis Board of Education in 1891, this handsome Romanesque Revival structure at 911 Locust is being converted to Loft style apartments by the Roberts Brothers. It's good to see that downtown St. Louis is trying to restore itself as a residential community, as well as a business and governmental center.
Public Art - "Sacrifice" at the Soldiers' Memorial
by yooperprof
"Sacrifice" and three other decorative figures stand prominently at the Soldiers' Memorial (World War I), a significant monument at the corner of 14th and Chestnut. They are the work of the expressionist sculptor Walker Hancock, (1901-1998), known for his commissions here in the Midwest (including the Liberty Memorial in Kansas City) and in Washington DC (work at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.)
Packing List

Ugh, it can be pretty humid in St. Louis in the summer, so you'll definitely want shorts then. In the fall and spring, weather can vary (my visits in May and March were very much on the cool side). Winter is supposedly icy and cold, so, winter clothes of course. It's the midwest, folks.
45 minutes away but a nice park indeed
by WaywardHoosier
Going down I-44 and need a break? Get off at the Hwy 100 - Gray Summit exit and right there is the entrance to Shaw Park which is affiliated with the Botanical Gardens. A small donation fee and you can walk the grounds for miles.
This park highlights natural botanical wildlife. The trails are first rate and not difficult. However, as aways in the summer, be ready for hot and humid weather. Best to go in the morning. Spring and Fall are fantastic times to hike here.
If you like exercise, give this place a try!
