Location of The Four Seasons St. Louis: A Bit Out of the Way?
by flyer1955
I have never been to St. Louis before and can use some help. I'm going to be in St. Louis for a concert series at Powell Symphony Hall. (I won't have a car.) I'm booked at the Four Season's. I gather that it is one of the nicest hotels in town, and I'm thrilled to be able to stay there, I'm just a little concerned about the location. How convenient is it to the concert hall, shops, public transport...? The casino next door is not of interest at all.
I wouldn't mind cabs at night but would like to have access to public transport during the day so that I can get to other areas and in from the airport.
If there is another luxury property that I should be looking at? I'd appreciate any feedback.

There is a Metrolink station near the hotel which you can use to leave downtown and to go to and from the airport. You will absolutely want to take a cab (or hotel car service) to/from Powell.
The Landing, the area where the hotel is located, is quite a party area, but is trying to become more upscale with the fancy new casinos (and the Four Seasons, obviously).
Depending on what your interests are outside of the concert, you may want to consider the Chase Park Plaza in the Central West End. About the same distance from Powell, just in the opposite direction, and right across the street from Forest Park - plus walking distance to some great, non-touristy restaurants and nightlife.
Travel Tips for Saint Louis

The Gateway Arch is of course, a given so I would have to say that the Science Center, Grant's Farm, the Zoo, the Art Museum and Lecledes Landing are all the absolute best value around. They are free and unforgetable! Hanging out by myself at the Zoo and sketching what ever catches my fancy is probably my favorite pasttime in St. Louis.
Downtown - Kiel Opera House (1934)
by yooperprof
Empty theatres are sad; big empty theatres in the Art Deco style from the 1930s are very sad.
Kiel Opera House - originally part of the mammoth "Municipal Auditorium" complex along Gateway Mall - has been vacant now for 17 years. The last public performance was held in the 3500-seat theatre in 1991. Yes, there has been talk . . . and you could fill a small library with all the redevelopment plans that have been bandied about.
The Opera House was named after St. Louis Mayor Henry Kiel, who served the city from 1912 until 1925. It's located at 1400 Market.
My memory of the Opera House: I saw Rudolf Nureyev and his Ballet Company perform "Don Quixote" here in the early 1980s!
Former US president Grant...

Former US president Grant lived in this cabin. It is located at 'Grants Farm'. The land was not good for farming. The biggest cash crop here was the firewood they cut and sold from trees on the land. President Grant called this 'The Hardscrabble Place'. Think of this when you are having a hard scrabble in life.
Art on the Square in Belleville
by BigBlueOne
Art on the Square is the #1 Art Fair in the Nation by Art Fair SourceBook 2010, normally running for a full weekend in May. I've been twice now and there is always plenty to do and see with local restaurants selling their food and people wandering all over the Main Street area of Belleville.
After you tour the art that's for sale, stop by one of the restaurants on Main Street to complete the evening.
Belleville itself is a suburb of St. Louis, about 15 minutes east of downtown off of I-64.
Fast Eddie's Patio
by BigBlueOne
Fast Eddie's is located in Alton, IL and has a very lively weekend bar scene. Food and drinks are all reasonably priced for a cheap, fun night out.
NO CREDIT CARDS ACCEPTED, so bring cash (but again, you won't need a lot of it)
