Buttons ans Bows
We stayed at The Southern Hotel July 23rd 2005. We stayed in the room called Buttons and Bows. It was phenomenal! There were two claw foot bathtubs that were placed in the room so that when you and your partner took a bath you face each other, one was smaller and pink (her's), one larger and blue(his). The bed was the most romantic bed I have had the pleasure to sleep in ect!. The accomodations could not have been better for a couple in love. After 23 years of marriage we still belong in that room!. The host were excellent. The breakfast was wonderful. We were in the most expensive of the rooms, our room was $175.00 per night and worth every penny. They had cold champane waiting when we arrived, I can't wait to go back to this fantastic Bed & Breakfast and charming town!

200 Year-Old Landmark
The Southern Hotel, circa 1790, is a red-brick Federal-style three-story hotel owned and operated by Barbara and Mike Hankins.
Literature says that they "saw the old wreck, which had been abandoned since 1980, and fell in love with [it] " They completely redid it by stripping it back to the walls and putting in new electrical, plumbing, and furnace.
Most people feel that it is the oldest operating hotel west of the Mississippi River.
It has been open since 1987, and it has 8 guest rooms, each with its own private bath.
It's like a Bed and Breakfast because a wonderful breakfast comes with the stay.
Unique Quality: Its finest feature is the garden where they use the herbs that they grow in their cooking. They also use the flowers that they grow as an extra "treat" in the guest rooms and public areas. Mike has wired the garden so that when it turns dark, thousands of tiny white lights appear to make it a fantasyland.
Behind the garden is a little shop that sells dried flowers, herbal soaps, and hand-painted gifts.
The Breakfast is French influenced: croissants, homemade lemon bread, strawberry soup, artichoke heart strata ( a layered egg-and-bread dish), juices, and coffee.
The cost ranges between about $85.00 and $130.00--a real bargain for what you receive in service, comfort, and food.
