Along Walnut Street there are many different styles of architecture in private homes that were prevalent at the beginning of the 20th century. While many of these homes have fallen into disrepair, others are in excellent conditions, and quite a handful have been turned into restaurants and B&B's. On the other hand, many of these ancient mansions have been preserved and kept private by the families who still call this historic district "home."

Baja Grill is a privately owned mexican restaurant that has good mexican food for a really good price! The best part of the restaurant is they have a small terrace outside to eat and drink in the lovely weather and the employees are so friendly! mexican tacos and shrimp fajitias
This is a great place to go with a group of friend for eating and drinking. Nice weather they even have an outdoor patio. It is a very casual atmosphere with great food anyone could enjoy. i love the thai chicken and shrimp, the mediterranean pasta, and the blackened chicken quesadilla
BAss Pro is one of the main features in the city. It has about 500,000 square feet of retail sporting goods for fishing, hunting, and many other sports. The Springfield location was to start of the operation in 1974 by Johnny Morris. In 1984, I had involvement in helping him find financing for building this store,m while he was on the verge of financial collapse. A comeback has been made, and they now have over 50 stores across the country. Maybe they make money now, but also have found a way to get access to public funds to build the sites. BAss Pro has a museum inside and a restaurant as well as large aquarium.
The City Fish & Wildlife Museum is not open, and may not be until maybe 2011? They project had substantial cost overruns and the city closed it down until they can figure out how to pay for the completion. Cost was to be $50 million and now it is pushing $120 million plus
