Of Springfield's five universities and colleges (as we said in the introduction), most are affiliated with a religious association. Pictured here is one of the five, Evangel University, which up until a few years ago conducted their high-priced lectures within army barracks from WWII. Of late there has been a rash of construction, mingling the modern brick-built halls of higher education with the wooden trunks that sheltered decades of graduating classes.
Here's an oddity: barn swinging. We Missourians don't have either the money or the climate for most traditional 'sports' so we make up our own. Hence, the barn swings. Basically all you do is get in this sort of slingshot-like swing, jump off a platform & hope you swing around in circles. It's actually kind of fun (or funny), and it's a heck of a work-out. I could hardly get out of bed the next day, I was so sore.
A good place to visit: Doennig Sports Swings, Hayrides Bonfires Rock Climbing & Paintball (the name says it all, don't you think?)

I went here awhile back and was not impressed and have not met anyone who has been. The decor is wonderful inside, more old french style. The place seems very upscale and believe me the price of the food matches. I was very excited when i first walked in the door and then even more excited when i found out they had snails. the food had way too much sauce on it and was very overpriced. The food wasnt horrible but for the price it was unacceptable.
The best thing about the place is they had live entertainment...they had a lady on the piano singing. she was really good but sometimes she was pretty loud and it was hard to enjoy dinner. They have a great wine selection
Any place that has working women's happy hour is a good place to go. Every Wednesday from 6-8pm. Dinner is busier than lunch. Lunch time, you can be served quickly and with great food. Overall this is a great dining experience if you are single or mated. The Mahi Riccard is wonderful, i also reccomend the Grilled Tropic Salmon, and the Chicken Valentine.
In the city center there are a number of edifices that rise above the average level, many of them being church steeples. Of these, the First Baptist Church on South Avenue is more prominent than most. Built in red brick, its classic entablature carried by four stately columns, the white steeple represents a congregate that began here in 1852.
