Thinking about moving to Springfield

by baxtercat

I have a chance to move closer to home (Arkansas) as there is a job offer in Springfield, MO. I don't know much about the area but have heard many good things. Could someone tell me about it? Specifically, is it a friendly city, good schools, etc.. Also, I think it is quite mountainous if I am not mistaken. Is getty around in the winter time difficult because of this?

Thanks

Springfield is a nice town to live in. I believe it is the 3rd largest city in Missouri. There ae a couple of colleges in town. Drury College and South West Missouri State. You will find everything in Springfield that you would expect in a small city in the mid-west. They now have a minor league baseball team! It is mountainous with regard to the Ozarks mountains. The Ozarks are a very old mountain range and folks from Colorado or Montana would call them hills. The location of Springfield in the Ozarks makes for many outdoor recreational oppurtunities. There are many lakes and rivers in the immediate area. It is not hard to get around in the winter months except perhaps in the more rural parts of town. Springfield does not get much in the way of snowfall during the winter.

i have lived in springfield since 97 when i moved down here to attend smsu, it is a nice town. not too big and not too small. if you like food there are tons of restaraunts to choose from. it really depends on what you are loking for in a town. do you have any specific questions?

I have moved away from and back to Springfield 3 times. The city is incredibly friendly, moving forward quickly with its arts and entertainment, and is close to some of the best and most beautifaul outdoor activities in the states. There is also a healthy job market and great schools.

Travel Tips for Springfield

The Old to the New

by mrclay2000

Much of what is old in Springfield is still in use after its original purpose. Take for instance Springfield's Central High School, Home of the Bulldogs. This classic red-brick structure was built in 1894 as Springfield High School, the first free high school in town and the first to racially integrate. Given its historic past, open houses are held here from time to time.

Impressive Animal Sculpture

by mrclay2000

Some of the animal sculptures in town are more acceptable as child's renditions than works by renowned sculptures (take the work outside the lion's pit at the Dickerson Park Zoo for instance). If you're unwilling to cough up the $11.25 to gain admittance into the American National Fish & Wildlife Museum, or you don't have much time to explore the free Bass Pro Shops, you'll find fewer wildlife sculptures as grandiose as the gigantic, springing ungulate outside the Fish and Wildlife Museum.

Civil War Missouri

by mrclay2000

Just miles south of Springfield in nearby Republic, Missouri, you can take the 4.9-mile auto tour of the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. Some structures from this Civil War engagement still stand, but like Vicksburg, Valley Forge and others the park is primarily used as a retreat for joggers and walkers. The park itself is quite rural, having little within it but the trees and the stream that gave the battle its name.

Fine Italian

by Moustique about Gilardi's Ristorante

this place is hidden on historic walnut street, i didn't even know it existed for the longest time. Amazing place to eat!! Nice italian atmosphere with very friendly service. The place was voted best itailan by 417 reader in 2003, 2004, and 2005. this is a very romantic place to go on a date. Appetizers try the calamari or the steamed mushrooms. i had an awesome steak with blue chees and portobella mushrooms MMMM!

Hmm?????

by Moustique about Steak & Ale

I have been here a couple of times and each time i am disappointed. Worst service each time i go which is very important to me and the food was nothing spectacular. I thought maybe I just had a couple of bad times, but I am not the only one that feels the same way. nothing
